After trying to use Native Instruments Maschine with Ableton, I found out I wanted to go back to my favourite DAW, Cubase 5.

Maschine has the ability to route 8 outputs. but it seems I cannot record these tracks directly to audio tracks.
Seems like I have to group it first, then record the group.
Is this right, or is there another solution?

It would be much easier for me to be able to record each sound from a drumkit for instance directly into individual audio tracks.
And if I want to do this, must I make a group for each sound from the drumkit, and then again route these to audio tracks?

I find it very strange that in one of the best DAW's around you cannot do this in an easier way.

i work with ableton and do it like this:

i set up an audio track to record maschine.
i record the beat, the theme etc into a clip
and then move it to another audiotrack.

you can set individual sounds to ext. out of maschine, no problem, or set up 8 audiotracks to record individual groups/samples, but this way works really the fastest for me.

    hey Coongaman,

reading your question about using maschine with Cubase. You seemed to infer that you are using the multiple outputs of maschine within Cubase 5? I know your question was related to groups etc within Cubase (indeed the only way to record audio from maschine into cubase)

Im using the same setup as yourself, the problem Im having is that nowhere can I see the 7 other inputs of maschine within Cubase? Would you mind telling me where or how you are able to route ext 2, 3 etc. I can only see ext 1 in cubase,

    cheers buddy

    Mike

There is a tiny button in the VST Instrument rack (on the left side of the instrument slot). You can activate the other outputs via a drop down menu there. Don't use instrument tracks, just open the plug-in in the instrument rack (F11) and control it with midi tracks or in the case of Maschine directly with the built in sequencer.

I had to google that myself, because I was updating from Cubase 3 to 5 a few months ago, and this was added in Cubase 4 or 5. And it makes sense, because your mixer doesn't get cluttered with instrument outs you eventually don't use anyway.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Kein,
Thanks for your reply, I had just figured it out myself after a couple of days:D
Works a treat, should be documented in the pdf. manual under cubase or something.

you have to use some creative routing in cubase to record the audio output of maschine (assuming this is what you want to do)

Not in front of daw now, so I hope I get this right ( I have the routing saved as a template and I only set it up once..)

    1. create group track, set input to maschine 1,2,3 etc.
    2. create stereo audio track, set input to group 1,2, 3 etc.
    3. arm the stereo track and your off...

Thats how you can record what your hearing from maschine.
I set up 8 groups and 8 stereo audio tracks, loaded an instance of maschine and saved the lot as a template. now when I open cubase it will load maschine in and I have the 8 outputs of maschine ready to record.

    hope that helps

    mike

please someone correct me if Ive got this wrong, Im 95% sure thats how it is, I think..lol

care to share that template mike? can you export it? will try it anyway, but drag and drop is pretty cool sowari! just be nice to record it with live scene changes etc without having to trigger them by pre-recording midi signals with a keyboard
