Simply enough; can you record outputs generated by Kontakt 2 and save it to a wave/aiff file?

    Are you on Windows?

This is probably what youR'e looking for:

move the file to the dir where the vst Kontakt2.dll is located, rename the executable to Kontakt2.exe and start it. There's a recording button which is not shown on the screenshot.

Cool, I didn't know that you can run a vsti inside audacity. I thought it did offline vst effect processing on audio files, but not realtime recording of vsti's. That's good to hear.

The Audacity's FAQ says: "The VST Enabler is not yet able to display custom interfaces for plug-ins. Instead, it uses generic controls for all VST plug-ins. Because of this, many plug-ins will look or act differently than they do in other programs."
How is it possible to use Kontakt2 without seeing its GUI? Did I miss something?

Host programs tend to have a simple preset selection scheme that works with most synths. I doubt it'd work with Kontakt, but you might try. You certainlt wouldn't be able to edit instruments without the UI.

I've been surprised at what Logic is able to know about my plugins but Audacity seems in most ways half-implemented. I've never used it as a VST host and wouldn't be surprised if it only half worked. It's free, though, so it'll cost you nothing to find out.

    amyhughes, thanks for the answer.

Another way to capture the outputs is to reroute them to a virtual audio input. For PC there's Virtual Audio Cable and I think there are some similar programs for mac.

In Mac OS X there is Soundflower by Cycle 74. You can route audio by adding it to your audio-midi aggregate device list and choosing that as your sequencer's audio source (thereby keeping your audio card or firewire driver in the list). By doing this I personally have gained an extra 16 audio channels.

When routing K2 in standalone via an internal virtual wiring scheme its important to remember that the enemy is not only RAM usage but also the CPU hit. Depending on what's loaded I've experienced between 22%-28% CPU usage per completely loaded instance of K2 (64 instruments) and that's before it starts streaming. In Logic I've noticed a 22% hit with a completely filled Logic sequence - that leaves enough for maybe one instance of standalone K2.

When I'm recording using Audacity of Sib 4.1, Kompakt (1 piano sample), and Kontakt 2 (10 instrument samples) [notation playback], I'm running 100% of a 2.2 GHz CPU. It seems to work quite well, though.
