I really want to get some mixes recorded but I just can't figure out how to configure my setup so that I can do it.

    My Equipment:
    • Traktor Scratch Pro
    • 2x Stanton Decks
    • Numark M2 Mixer
    • Audio 4 DJ
    • Surround Sound Speakers /w Subwoofer

This is how I have my equipment set up:

I understand as it is recording shouldnt work, I've tried switching my speakers to the record output on my mixer which didn't work, as well as some other things. The most I've got is a recording of the high pitch squeel that the timecode makes when it's playing on the deck.

So with my setup can I record? If so, I would like to know what to do to make it possible.

Any help would be much appreciated,
    Dan.

since you're mixing externally and use timecode you can't use traktors recording function

you'd need to have 2 cinch inputs left, assign that do ie deck c and use external recording on input c

what you need to do is put a cinch to jack cable from the record out to the mixer to the line in of your pc and record using a software like audacity

Does this mean that with my current equipment I can't do it? As you can see from the pictures all of my cinch inputs are taken on both mixer and a4dj.

For example, if i bought a cinch to jack cable and ran it from recording out on my mixer to line in on my pc, and then tried to record with software (i.e. audacity), with all other cables plugged in as they are, would it not work?

you can do this using only the audio 4 dj and ONE turntable to control both decks.
    Here how it works
connect one turntable to in/out of channel A as you probably have done it.
Now go to preferences and under timecode choose Deack A & B to be controled by channel A.
Connect your master or recording output of your mixer to your Channel B in of audio 4 dj .
Now at recording preferences choose external and channel B.

The trick is that Traktor will automaticaly switch to interal PLAY mode when you load the next track to the other deck letting you control the "new " track with timecode.

    It works really

    So the situation is:

    • If i want to record a mix through Traktor using my current equipment, I have to do it using only one deck as the audio 4 dj doesnt have enough inputs to support both decks AND record.
    • But, if I want to use BOTH decks and record a mix, I need to go out and buy a cinch to jack adapter, hook that up from my mixer to PC line-in, and record through 3rd-party software (i.e. Audacity).

    Have I got this right?

If so, Thank you all for taking some time out of your life to help me, it's much appreciated!

    Yes that is correct :)

edit: you could also use the asio driver, use the audio 4, add an input of your onboard soundcard and assign that to a recording deck but that's wouldn't really be a good idea

The best recording I ever had was with Traktor's internal recording mode. Set Traktor to Internal Mixer, route your master to CH1 of the Numark mixer and route your cue to CH2. Get an M-Audio X-Session Pro and map everything how your Numark mixer is. And viola! This way, you can still use your timecode for control, which rules. And you're getting a raw WAV audio dump on your hard drive that you can instantly listen to and prepare a demo from.

I find this better than using a recorder for a few reasons.
    1. You need no recording equipment.
    2. The resulting audio file is clean, unadulterated (by all that DA-AD conversion), and sounds great.
    3. You're still getting the best out of your soundsystem by using your DJ mixer as a regular audio mixer. So the freq levels in your mix should actually be "normal". Just make sure you midi map your cue functions! Cuz that's how you'd cue in this setup.

I know you probably didn't want to buy anything else, but it's a nice way to have a little added functionality to you setup and record high-quality mixes. My latest mix was recorded this way soundcloud.com/romanseoul.I think the X-session pro is a little over-priced (as most MIDI controllers are), but try to talk your dj equipment dealer down a bit ;)
