We could have setup everything so that the daily use would have been totally simple and the quality of the recordings would be top. The complexity would have been a one time act. In daily use he would have only started Reaper, pressed Record, played his piano, pressed Stop and then export the recording to a WAV file.

Even Kontakt needs a first setup to be used with a keyboard and audio interface. That is complex too.

But who cares, the thread starter found a solution, I hope he can live with.

The guys at Piano World read my requirements and came up with yet another solution, better than the kludge I've been using.

    This is SaviHost: http://www.pianoworld.com/Uploads/files/SaviHost.and.Kontakt.jpg
On top of Kontakt (or any other VST), it adds a menu bar and a toolbar ... and nothing else.
I appreciate the complete lack of DAW clutter.
    And it's completely free.

It has the record and stop buttons prominently placed.
And the only setup was to specify the MIDI input and sound card output.
    Superb!

Just a clarification - Reaper is not Shareware; there is a 60-day fully-functional evaluation period, after which you should purchase the licence or uninstall it.

Reaper IS shareware, but NOT freeware, which means you are right about the evaluation period of 60 days.

Please don't confuse the terms shareware and freeware.

It's not shareware. It's a commercial program. Nowhere on Cockos website is it mentioned that it's shareware. DarkStar is correct.

Here's a proper definition of shareware: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareware. Nothing mentioned applies to Reaper (except the reminder screen when you load it - but that hardly makes Reaper "shareware" since there are no other limitations whatsoever).

Yes, and when I quote that article ...

... Reaper seems to be a shareware, that never looses it's funcionality, but always reminds the user, that he needs a licence.

But who cares ... we all know, that we have an evaluation period of 60 days and that a licence costs 60 bucks for private use. I think, this is the most important fact ;)
