Hello! Has anyone tried to route the four Traktor decks into the Roland MX-1 and use it as an external mixer? I'm about to upgrade and I'm thinking about the MX-1 instead of the Denon x1600 because I also use other gear in my sets...Novation Circuit, Aira VT-3, and other random bits of kit. Also, how do the eq and filters compare to a traditional dj mixer? Thanks for any input!

Alright, maybe no one has tried. But am I right to think I can route each Traktor deck to a different midi channel?

would recon that should work fine, your x1600 already does it, same as my X1700. I would take it that routing should be pretty much the same as in your X1600.
just an assumption though, so not 100%. Surely you would just setup the MX 1 channels to match Traktor in external mixing mode.

Hey that is what I plan to do too. Yes it is possible to route the Traktor decks to MX-1 tracks - I have tested that. I have not finished setting up the rest of the mapping though. I plan to do a two deck mapping for External Mixing Mode that includes:
    - hi/med/low eqs (Traktor eqs)
    - hi/med/low kills
    - four FX on/levels per track (haven't fully decided on this yet)

Also I want to add a page for stem controls to replace the FX

This will also allow the Traktor decks to go through the MX-1 filters and FX too.

I can confirm for sure that it is doable.

Hey just bumping this to see if you were able to confirm. I'm about to switch over to an Mx-1 setup for traktor on four decks. It's really going to simplify my DJ setup in the studio if this is the case. Thanks for the work! B

Really interested to hear if this was successful?

About to make first steps into DJing, looking at Traktor and considering the equipment I already got - including the MX-1.

Hey Polar Ops - did you end up creating a mapping? V interested to hear how you got on, if the setup worked for you etc....

This sounded interesting, so I just hooked up my MX-1 to Traktor in external mixing mode and before I could leave the set-up options it crashed and now Traktor crashes every time I select the MX-1 as the audio interface. I'm going to try troubleshooting it but did you test this on Windows or Mac? I tried it with the Windows ASIO driver.

I experimented with this some more and got it to work to some extent. It seems you do have to have the MX-1 in External mode in order to use channels 1-6. (you can access at least some of the other channels in Mixer mode - I got channels 7-10 to work) The MX-1 syncs well with Traktor using the midi clock.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to access the MX-1 as a sound card with both Traktor and Ableton at the same time. (apparently it isn't a multi-client sound card) This seems to be a problem for trying to mix my external Aira gear in with the Traktor channels. (on channels 1-6 at least) I would have to run each USB channel through a Traktor deck and then back out again through the MX-1, and there aren't enough Traktor decks for all of the USB ports plus any Traktor track decks. You probably can hook up external gear to the analog inputs of the MX-1 and run some Traktor decks through the MX-1's channels 7-14 in Mixer mode but I didn't try this yet.

There may be an arbitrary limit of (the first) 14 channels on any sound card that Traktor can be routed out of. This is what I found with another audio interface and some of my experimenting with the MX-1 seems to point in this direction as well.

It seems like a better set-up (for my gear at least) to use a second sound card for Traktor and then I can run those tracks through the analog inputs of the MX-1 and use the MX-1 to mix those tracks with my Aira gear and Ableton tracks. I prefer my other DJ mixers for Traktor anyway, although the MX-1 effects are interesting when used on individual tracks from Traktor.

I also ended up trying out a more complicated set-up using another external mixer and an external sound card along with the MX-1 and using a Traktor S8 just as a midi controller. This allows me to route the Traktor decks through Ableton as well, so the individual decks can be recorded separately and (VST) effects can be added to any channel. This doesn't do much for cutting down on the amount of gear involved though.
