In general a round-robin function refers to multiple samples - so if you want to use it you have to provide various samples. If you want to use only one sample, the standard modulators (LFO, Envelopes, Velocity) or the Humaniser function will help to alter the timbre of the hits. One note about the round-dobin fuction - as far as I know Battery just offers a global setting, i.e. you can't have more than one round-robin group per instance. That means you can't have, for instance, a set of conga hits and a set of bongo hits in one instance and let each one have their own round-robin group. That's why I'm so eagerly waiting for a Battery Or Maschine update...

    cool .. thanks!

Okay ... so that is quite helpful and the answer I was looking for apparently is the "Humaniser" function - that's gonna do, essentially, what I need for it to do in the absence of my acoustic/actual instruments.

But when you make reference to "an instance" in Battery - are you referring to, for example - a "kit" in battery mapped out to my controller? Such that if the kit has congas and snare drum, I can only use a round-robin (sample grouping) on EITHER the congas OR the snare BUT NOT BOTH?

I think that's what you mean, but I just want to clarify.

    Thanks again for the help!

Pretty please wih sugar on top, how about adding round robin support for sounds in Maschine? Simple and easy with random or sequencial sample selection would go a loooong way improving Maschine IMHO.

Workflow idea 1 - Sample chain style

    1. Sample a number of hits with slight variation to the sound.
    2. Slice
    3. Press "Apply RR"
    4. Done!

What you end up with is a sample chain. And since the slicing in Machine has detect mode the hit/sound/instrument you sample doesn't even have to be evenly spaced in the sample chain file.

Workflow idea 2 - Kontakt sample group style

    1. Drag and drop multiple files onto a single pad.
    2. Set playback mode to Round Robin.
    3. Done!

So this would be kind of like the round robin you can setup in Kontakt with a group of samples having a round robin start option.

Workflow idea 3 - Link pad groups style

    1. Load up a group with the sounds you want to use. Say I load a kick (on sound 1) and 5 RR snare samples (on sound 2 - 6).
    2. Press "PAD MODE" and assign the snares (sound 2-6) to Link Group 1 with one of them as the master.
    3. Enable "Link Group RR" on Link Group 1.
    4. Select "Link Group RR Mode" to either sequential or random.
    5. Done!

Now this gives a lot of flexibility and doesn't break compatibility and/or behavior of a "sound" in Maschine. Like you could just as well load up 3 instances of Monark and do a link group RR to get a very complex sounding and evolving synth bass.

And to end this fabulous feature request a great example how good a round robin sampled drum machine can sound compared to regular static samples:

+1....sounds like a ton of more work for N.I., but a fantastic idea to make Maschine an even more musical tool for creation.

    I'd also like this feature.

It seems like it would be easy to implement and the feel it gives to your playback is just something else, hook it up people.

In short: Round Robin is the ability of selecting different samples by accident or triggered by aftertouch while using only one pad.
Example: strings triggered by only one note, but playing different samples or (like session strings) sample endings for more human and dynamic feel.

This is in Kontakt already. Adding it to Maschine's native sounds would dramatically increase the library size. I prefer to keep it within kontakt, which has its own dedicated library drive.
