There are hundreds and hundreds (maybe thousands) out there, so if you could be more specific with your request, that would help. For example, what kinds of sounds are you looking for?

Your question is a little like saying, "I'd like to move to the United States; where's the best place to live?" Very complex question when there are many thousands of cities to choose from, and you haven't even told us your profession.

Really hard questions to answer, alright!

You've got people like SonicCouture (and their subdivision) who specialise in somewhat rare instruments. Can you say it's a better deal than other vendors? Well, nobody else saves you the effort of building a 1.5-ton percussive instrument :)

ToneHammer specialise in weird and unique, rather than simply rare. I think they aren't even telling what the sounds are from in one of their packs. They also have a brand of cheaper, simpler instruments. Still weird!

CineSamples have many excellent instruments for film scoring - orchestras which play all sections on each note, fancy metal guitars, multi-instrument orchestral sections with many articulations and a huge choir package with a phrase builder.

Sonokinetic make unique vocal-based instruments, with a custom interface. Also heading into film scoring territory.

Ilya Efimov makes really good guitar libraries for Kontakt. You might have seen him post here.

Those are highlights from my "must buy later" links :)

I would add these to Ronnys excellent recomendations.

Orange Tree and Indiginus for guitars.
    Hollow Sun for classic keys
    Kirk Hunter for orchestral
    SampleTekk for pianos.

But there are hunderds and hunderds of options. KVR is the closest resource to what you are looking for.

    thanks!

thank you all for the leads!

I got K4 about a month ago and am still learing to make sounds on it, I find it easier to create a sample set in Reason's NNXT, then port it across to K4. Learning the ins and outs of working with K4's sonic 'building blocks'. Are there any templates emulating a straightforward sampler?

Yeah, I just got Sonic Couture's Mbira and Glassworks ... and the Glass Armonica is awesome! Got Kirk Hunter's Pop-Rock Strings ... way cool (wish there was more bite in the basses). Garritan's Jazz and Big Band set was a real let down :)

will take a look at the other sites you were so kind to mention.

    thanks again!

Why isn't there a KVR-type database of sample libraries? It wouldn't be that hard to maintain - just provide a form for vendors to list their products and provide links, and allow visitors to leave comments.

Seems like it would be in NI's own interest to sponsor such a site, since it's primarily the enormous wealth of third-party products that drives sales of Kontakt.

NI does maintain a list on their site, which is only of authorized Kontakt Player-powered libraries. I don't know of comprehensive databases of non-Player libraries. Hmmm. I might have to start one...could be cool to have a ratings system where people can submit reviews.

Well I might as well add my Kontakt offerings to this list. Here is the patchpool overview page for Kontakt patches and libraries.

I have the Galaxy Vintage D sound library, and it's outstanding. It's a Steinway D Concert Grand piano.
