Hi, new user just finding my feet with Battery 3.

As the title suggests, I was wondering if there was any way to route an individual cell to an fx or group channel.

    Cheers

Assuming you mean within a DAW: In Battery, File>Options> right bottom-ish of the options pane, specify the number of extra stereo and mono output channels you want to allow for. Then your DAW should present the extra B3 channels as available inputs to any audio and/or aux track. Then in the B3 plug, bottom right of the cell tab for any cell is the output channel: ST 1/2 is the main B3 instrument stereo output, selecting any of the extra channels assumes you will choose that B3 channel as input for a seperate audio or aux track, and that's where that cell's audio will appear.

    Thanks for the reply Andy.

Yes, I meant within a DAW (using Cubase, which I'm also new to).

In B3, I've added some more channels and have assigned some highhats to st 3/4.
I have created an FX channel (just with a phaser on it) but am unable to route the hat to the FX channel. How/where can I do this? Or is that a question for the Cubase forum?

    Thanks.

Ah. Know what, I've got SX3, but only ever really use it for interfacing with colleagues, and occasionally with my XP laptop to record away from my setup (mostly I use DP, which is Mac only, more's the pity) - so I've never actually used SX3 to work up a complete track, only for overdubbing and editing audio. And having just had a quick look see, turns out SX3 does VSTi's slightly differently from DP.

Assumption again here, that you're on SX3 or 4, and not an earlier Cubase, but given that, you'll find that simply declaring a B3 instance will actually automatically give you 'tracks'/channels for every output you've specified in B3 - you'll see them in/under the Battery 3 folder in the VST Instruments folder. So if you've assigned your hats to their own channel and want to phase them, select the relevant channel within the B3 folder, open up the inserts for that channel, and simply 'insert' the phaser there. The FX channels are really for reverbs/delays etc, where you would feed the FX from multiple tracks/channels via 'send's. You could do it the 'send' way for phase and chorus and the like, but most people would consider these to be 'insert' fx. And if you want to apply the exact same 'insert' to multiple tracks/channels, you do that by routing them through a Group channel, and 'inserting' on the Group.

    Hi again,

Yes, using Cubase 4. Still unable to get this to work though. When I assign the cell to a new output, it does get a channel in the B3 VSTi folder, but the channel does not give the option to open up and add any inserts. I will try at the Cubase forum to see if there is something specific I need to do with it.

Thanks again for all your help.

I guess 4 maybe different, but in SX3, if you click on the channel in the main project window, that channel's name will be displayed top left under the toolbar and object details bar, and under that you've got Inserts, EQ, Sends et al for that channel - click on Inserts, and there are the slots for up to 8 Inserts.

Actually I've got it a bit wrong. When I assign the new channel I don't even gey a new channel in the project window. The one that I thought appeared was already there.

Just to recap what I've done:
    -Opened a new project
    -Created a MIDI track
-Loaded B3 VSTi and loaded a kit
-Assigned B3 to the MIDI track (cells play as expected)
-In B3, gone to File -> Options and checked the # of Stereo/Mono outputs (8 of each are already assigned so I don't need to add any more?)
-Closed the options window and selected a cell
-Clicked on the cell tab and, at the bottom right underneath the volume slider, changed the Channel from 'Mastr' to 'St 3/4'

Now, is it at this point a new channel should appear? Because nothing happens. This may be a peculiarity of C4, but I have asked this in the Cubase forums and they agree with you that a channel should appear. Am I missing a crucial step with this?

    Cheers.

Actually, disregard. I have got it working now. I was looking in the wrong place, in the main project window, instead of in the VST rack to assign the output (http://knowledgebase.steinberg.net/138_1.html had the missing step).

Thanks a lot for all your help though.

Ah. Yes. That's new in 4, sorry, must have been a confusing few posts without that info. But it's a good idea, saves having endless unused channels floating around.

    Glad you're good to go.
