i have both, use my x1 to control effects with the normal mapping and on MIDI mode i use the INSTANT GRATIFICATION Midi Fighter Mapping. couldn't live without it! it's absolutly amazing! for me, it's well worth it! I'm glad i decided not to sell it when i got the S4

i use both. Just uploaded my first mapping of the X1 for controlling some controls that are not on the S4 (or only when switching Decks, what i try to avoid - e.g. FX3&4).

I would recomend an X1 besides S4 but it is not mandatory :)

The key thing with using the S4 with the X1 is, if you use the sampling deck .tsi with the X1, you wont have to change decks to use any of the controls for the C&D decks for the sample decks on the S4. The X1 with controls everything on the sample decks with still keeping your A&B decks for tracks.

I use timecode with the vinyls on the A&B decks with 8 hot starts on the S4 for A&B, then the sample decks are only being used by the X1.

The only thing you would be using on the S4 for the sample decks would be the C&D faders and maybe the fx knobs.

    Works like a charm.

    Hi OCD!

I also have both KS4 & KS1 and i want to control samples C&D decks just like you do. Downloaded the TSI in TraktorBible but cant seem to get it working. I think it has something to the control manager settings. May I know what your settings to integrate your KS4 & KS1?

    Hope you can help.

    Thanks!

Ok Spinhead. Let start off from scratch.

Not sure if your using Traktor Pro 2, or Traktor Scratch Pro 2, anyways, it doesn't make a difference.

Leave the X1 unplugged from USB for now.

Start up your S4 first, then open up Traktor Pro 2 or Traktor Scratch Pro 2.

Once Traktor is opened, go into your preferences, then click controller manager on the left. Up top in that device window, make sure you only have 2 things in that device list. There should be only 2 things, scratch pro 2 default keyboard mapping and Traktor Kontrol s4 mapping. If you have a X1 mapping in that device list, it needs to be deleted. If its there, select it, then click the edit button then delete it.

Ok now leave the preference window open the click Traktor Kontrol S4 on the bottom left. Once in there, the 6th selection from the top, click on sample play button drop down arrow. Select 5-8 hot cues.

Go back to the controller manager again. Plug in your X1. Once plugged in, there with be a popup that comes up, it will ask you yes or no. Click yes.

Now your X1 will be in the device list in the control manager.

Now on the bottom of your preferences box, click import. Now depending what operating system your using, you have to find a tsi file.

If you have windows 7, after you click the import button, a popup to search for the tsi will come up. Click documents, then click the native instruments folder, then click the Tracktor folder, then settings, then default settings, then controller, then native instruments folder, you need to click the X1 addon mapping.

Now in the device list in the controller manager, you should see 3 things. The Kontrol S4, the keyboard mapping, and now the sample deck X1 mapping (if you see the other X1 mapping, not the sample deck one, it needs to be deleted). Click the sample deck X1 mapping in devices. To the right of it, make sure the in port says KX1, if it doesnt, you need to select it.

    Walla, thats it.

Now you have the S4 running decks a&b with 8 hot cues with platter control with the wheel, or if you have timecode vinyls like i do, use the timecodes.

The pdf file should be in that same folder to tell you what the functions of the X1 are in the sample deck mapping.

Reply to this thread if you are still having issues. My suggestion is to export these setting in the preferences so you will never lose them again.

Let me know how it goes. This works like a charm and by me, has been heavily tested.

    Hi again OCD!

Thanks for the help and effort. I've finally got my KX1 working with my KS4 because of your detailed explanation. I didn't know there was a PDF file included in the NI document. Now I can trigger both the volume and fader controls of the sample decks separately with my KX1.

    Thanks again!

Not a problem at all, i'm very glad it worked. I wish they would make this a sticky because alot of people had the X1 before the S4 came out. With both of these NI devices hooked up together, sky is the limit.

I like having my 8 hot cues on both A and B decks and the sampler decks for C and D on the X1.

It sucks changing from deck a to c and b to d., just to use the triggers on the sample decks.

    Good Luck!

    OCD....

Many thanks for this... awaiting the arrival of the X1 any day now, so this set up tutorial is a dream :)

I agree to switch between decks just to trigger samples is a royal pain in the butt! I'm hoping by integrating the 2, it will complete my digital set up :)

One question though... I currently use Channel D for my microphone when broadcasting my radio show, will i still be able to use the above settings, and the X1 only control Deck C (Sample deck) ?

    Many Thanks

    MoZ

That I'm not sure about. I think you would be able to use both mic and sample deck depending on if you use the mic input with just the mic volume control. If you use the live input on D for the Mic with the D channel fader, I know you won't able to use the mic and the sample deck on D. I'll try it out for you to see what happens.

I will post the results when I know the mic and the sample deck on deck D are working together. If they don't, I will post those results also.

Well you have to use a live input to get the microphone working, so that would count out having the sampler and Mic on the same channel.

That isn't totally true, you could reroute one of the deck inputs to the aux in and control the volume with the right knob on the front of the S4. If you want the loop recorder to sample from it without having to turn a deck intro Live Input just select AUX as the source. Just as a side note, this isn't related to the Thru switch on the back.

PS: I'm working on a X1 mapping that merges the original TSI with the sample deck one, being able deck C or D on the fly between track deck and sample deck. I'm modifying as little as posible form the original maps so it's easier to learn for old X1, making a few improvements such as retrigger acting as CUP rather than CUE or have the browse knobs act like the beatjump encoder on the S4 (matching the size with the loop length)Stay tuned on this thread: http://www.djtechtools.com/forum/showthread.php?t=27776

Thanks guys... I was thinking more along the lines of this when using the Mic....
    Channel D - Mic - Live Input
    Channel A + B - Decks
    Channel C - Sample deck

My question related to this really...
The S4 will control Channels A, B + D, and can I use the X1 to solely control Channel C (sample deck) ?

The normal club set up will be A + B = S4 and C+D (sample decks) on the X1

    thanks in advance :)

Yes sir. If you didn't use the mic in channel d, you would be able to use c&d sample decks just on the X1. Of course you still have to use the channel fader for the c&d to control volumes.

I'm using a setup where I use the X1 to control filters and volume of my samples individually on deck c & d, with some various features connected to the leftover buttons and knobs, such as wave zoom, deck switching etc. Still trying to figure out what to do with the last few buttons :)

This is where the spare overlay comes in handy.

I was using Rainer's, but then switched to yours. Had some problems with the knobs not reacting everytime, so I will try and debug it, maybe also remove some of the functions you put in as I don't need them.

But kuddos for the mapping, I like the zoom a lot. It comes handy for on-the-fly hot cues :)
