    Hi there,

i recently bought an S8. In my previous setup with a hercules controller, i was able to define a pleasant amount of headroom for the audio output. As soon as i use the S8 as my audio interface, this option dissappears.

So, if i can't change the headroom manually: what is the fixed amount of applied headroom for the s8? I can't find anything in the documentaions.

Also i wonder why autogain sometimes has dramatically wrong guessings of how much a track should be pushed/limited.

Direct comparison with settings for my focusrite souncard it looks like full -12db headroom gets set for the s8. Can someone confirm?

Hi, there is no standard procedure to get that headroom setting on Traktor while on S8. But there is quite strange "hack" to get that setting to appear :) it can be achieved via editing of the program itself (traktor.exe) in some decent editor (notepad++ for examle) - but this kind of exploiting the software, isnt legal at all :) I was successful with it in windows version only, but i dont use it... :) ).

Edit: fixed headroom is -9 if i remember correctly

Hm.. directly compared to the same track played with focusrite as audio source and headroom set to -9 it's still louder than played on s8's audio interface.

having a 1k Euros controller with such a limited / non-configurable audio interface inside is frustrating.

Your S8 is not limited. This is only a limit in Traktor.
And the Headroom is necessary and helpfull.

But of course it would be nice if you could configure it yourself.

Yeah found that. I wonder why NI does this. Good to know i can overcome this if neccessary. Thanks a5tr0.

As another positive Sidenote i can change Gain of the Microphone this way, too. So i don't have to push the gain knob every time i need to talk and move it back when playing a track on deck 3.

Hey, i have the same Issues with my s8. When i Record Something i have to pull up the Record Gain almost till maximum.
Can you tell me, How did you get to the "editor" to change the "FixedHeadRoomIndB" Value?
Dont understand why this is a Fixed Value... I mean okay the S8 is made for Remixdecks, Effects, Samplig, etc. But its just annoying that you cant change it in the Settings... -.-

    Hi Marvin,

if you are on windows, you'll need some decent editor, such as notepad++ or some kind of hexeditor.

    1. make backup of "c:\Program Files\Native Instruments\Traktor Pro 3\Traktor.exe"

    2. run notepad++ as administrator

    3. be sure you have switched off "word wrap" (wrapping lines of 50 MB file is really pain for the cpu :) )

    4. open "c:\Program Files\Native Instruments\Traktor Pro 3\Traktor.exe" via "file/open menu"

    5. find string '<device id="Traktor Kontrol S8" >'

    6. couple of lines lower you will see: '<property name="FixedHeadRoomIndB" value ="-9" type="float" />'

    7. rewrite/replace
    >>> '<property name="FixedHeadRoomIndB" value ="-9" type="float" />'
with spaces (exact number of characters as original string!!!)
    >>> ' ' (this forum can show only one space - in editor it is 62 spaces!!!!)
...if there will be more or less spaces than original count of characters, traktor will popup error message and wont run!

    8. save file

    9. run traktor

    10. if this will not work - replace exe from your backup

I dont know if this will work on macs.

    Cheers, a5tr0

What the **** ... would have been way too easy if we had just let us change that directly in the tractor settings ...

    this **** is disgusting

Has the Controller need to be connected or is it possible without the Device running ?

It was not supposed to change this setting. I think NI has definitely reason to not allow this by default. So this change of exe file isn't "quite legal" anyway I think :) .

no, this is edit of the file "traktor.exe" only - i wrote you complete instruction above, step-by-step...

! Only thing you need is to close traktor application prior to do some changes in it.

if you are not familiar with this kind of things, i can change it for you and post you a link to download edited file. Only i have to know is what version do you have installed (including build number).
