S8 Screen freezing when Macbook screen sleeps

does anyone know if downgrading is an option or if the problem in traktor software or the S8 firmware? i'll gladly give up stem decks for a controller that doesn't freeze.

 

Sorry you S8 DJ are having issue.... all i can say is be careful...you don't want to crash in a live event. It will cost you far more than the cost of the S8.

Know that I NI is generally very slow to fix these type of issue. In many cases problems like this are completely ignored for months or longer. Sadly its just how NI has been operating lately. If NI really cared and someone official from NI would be on this forum acknowledging a lot of these issues and support would to a better job.

NI needs to take a proactive role in looking at problems, improving communications and improve their testing. I been saying this for years. Hate to see DJs having hardware issues and potentially crashing live.

 

I believe to do this the only way would be to contact support and they would have to give you a special updater. I believe this issue came up when the S4 MK2 had issues.

 

I think I finally figured out what the issue is here. Today, I read an article on DJ Tech Tools that explains why NI has not implemented the 4-lane stems waveforms on the Traktor software although they are visible on the S8. You can read the article here. Essentially there isn't enough computer horsepower to do this without the aid of the GPU. As I mentioned earlier, I noticed that the S8 screens freeze unless Traktor is the foreground application on your computer. I believe these two issues are related and it is not necessarily a bug, but more of a design constraint on the current software as many computer OS assign CPU priority to the foreground task. I have read somewhere that NI has a solution in the works for version 3.0, so perhaps this is a non-issue.

To those of you whose screens appear frozen, go to your Mac or PC and see if Traktor has focus (ie. make sure it is the topmost window). Let me know here if your screens work again after that. I'd be curious to see if that fixes it.

I have noticed this exact same problem, when I first purchased the S8, it came with 2.6 these problems never existed

 

so what is support saying about these Screen Freeze issues?

 

Read elsewhere on the forum that NI changed the way the full screen works. Basically it treats the screen and app as the primary application being run. So effectively no more multi tasking. If you try flipping apps The music continues but S8 screens all freeze as Traktor is no longer on the screen.

I did not do that on older versions of Traktor, really annoying. I guess they had to make some sacrifices to get STEMS out there and working. They were several months late in delivering it. They are only putting the creator tool out as a beta next week several weeks after launching STEMS.

We can only hope they are working on fixing it.
Also noticed the load meter is totally wrong on 2.9. Mine says little to no load, yet if it switch to activity monitor says Traktor is using 50% CPU! (Yes that is with the screens freezing and on an MBP i7 with 8gb ram and an internal SSD)

Lots of room for improvement in the S8 some things are just too quirky in terms of workflow.

not sure but likely because of my rhetoric.

anyways.... i spoke with tech support on the phone today for about 20 minutes and they were already aware of the issue. unfortunately they could not provide any info about when or if this will be fixed. they are just passing my info and some details about my computer to the developers.

the gentleman that i spoke with was very professional and willing to help. he told me that he has also experienced the same issue. he recommended using some utils that will keep my computer screen from turning off. and he mentioned that i should not switch desktops when using the s8 because that will also cause a problem.

overall i didn't learn much. at least i know for sure that NI is aware of this issue. maybe it is something they can fix. maybe not. i don't know what else i can say about this other than i am very disappointed.

 

The Problem ist not solved since 3 Years...
I see, the only solution for that is, to install the "NoSleep" app... Hm... Good Workaround but not a solution for the Problem!

 

I don't have 2.11 but in traktor 3 if you use in full screen mode (MacOs HS) the display keeps working while you are on other virtual desktop, in fact I was typing this while the music sounds and the display is working.

 

I installed the nosleep application and the screens still freeze if I close the laptop lid.
