    Hi all!

Got my Maschine yesterday, and I haven´t had so much fun making music for a long time! One little problem though, which isn´t machine specific. What is the best way to sample with maschine from other applications, for example iTunes, youtube... It´s possible to use soundflower to send output from application to maschine and sample, but then I can´t find a way to monitor the signal (without feedback loop). Anyone done this and have tips or ideas?

One possibility might be audio hijack, but I actually never tried it...

Thanks in advance, and have fun!

I just use Audio Hijack and save it as aiff file, then import it into Maschine.

There's another app called Jack OS X here that might help. It's similar to Soundflower but more versatile. Which also means it's a bit more complicated. I haven't tried it with this but it might help

Thanks for the quick replies! Audio Hijack works, but then you have to import the sound and don´t get to use the nice "sampling" button on maschine. Jack OS X on the other hand seems to work exactly as I wished, and audio can be routed from any application to maschine and then out to the physical outs. The applications can send audio both to machine and to the physical outs for monitoring, so it seems like a perfect solution after just a few minutes of testing. Thank you, now I´m in sample heaven...

Hi, can anyone give me detailed instructions on how to set up soundflower so that I can sample in Maschine, but also hear the audio? Thanks.

I've heard this can be done with Audacity. Supposedly it has a "record what you hear" function (any sound coming through your speakers is recorded). So in theory you can play a video on YouTube or any other site and record the audio in Audacity and save it as a wave or mp3 file.

i'll try to find some time to do this, but it would help if you provided details of you Mac and if you have a soundcard.

a simple answer is: set Soundflower to be your your output device in you System Preferences. then choose Soundflower as in the Input Device in Maschine's Audio Preferences. that should mean that iTunes (as an example) will then play into Maschine.

if you have a soundcard, then you might be able to have Maschine's Audio Out go to that soundcard- rather than the System Output.

i think you need to have Soundflowerbed (the app that comes wit Soundflower) running to do this.

    Thanks Sowari,

I am using Maschine on a MacBook Pro. Most of the time I am only using the internal sound card, but occasionally I use a Focusrite Saffire. I have tried various settings and the best I can manage is audio going to either Maschine or to the sound output, but not both...so I can't hear the sound that Maschine is sampling.

okay i have pictures - using internal sound card- , i hope they will help.

you need to set Sound Flowerbed to monitor the signal. i needed to click around a lot but i did get to record from Quicktime into Maschine.

note how i have Soundflower 16 set to Built-in Output... that seemed to work. also i had to choose the 16 channel version because Maschine does not seem to recognize the 2 channel version. with the set-up in the pics i was hearing the quicktime output and Maschine. i suggest turning down the Maschine Output when you are recording the samples.

    Thanks Sowari,

I tried the settings...and they didn't work until I checked "Built-in output" on the soundflower 2 channel setting in Soundflowerbed.

Now I can hear and record everything.

Next I will try with Saffire.

    Thanks again,

    Jon

Do you know of a program for Windows Vista that can do what Soundflower does?

Hey, I have noticed way too much latency while using SoundFlower making it virtually useless when you want to add a piano loop over the top of anything. You just end up switching your audio out in system prefs to built-in output making it not really ideal. It also usually screws-up my audio enough to make me restart after switching.

I would love someone to explain detailed instructions on using JACK to do this. Seems like a much simpler approach with less lag from people who have done it, but JACK is a bit more complicated. I will try to read the manual in the meantime. Thanks
