    So what is sampling exactly?

I think it is where a sample is cut up at different stages and assigned to different pads?

I was thinking of getting the "Fire Wire" (Cosmic Gate) sample made somehow, and trying mucking around with that. How does that sound?

Does anyone care to lay out the very basics?

I'm not that much into sampling myself, but with maschine most people chop up a sample and assign the slices to the 16 pads, each pad playing a part of the original sample.
Sampling is an art for itself, but a basic descripton would be cutting a sample (by adjusting start and end point) and modifying it (for example by using Filters & Effects)
