    Hello all,

This is a little DnB track i started in Reason 5, mixed in Pro Tools with a little added extras from Komplete 7 and mastered (as well as i can) in Logic.

    It's pretty dark and sinister...

Let me know what you think...

Hi Gareth, Mix is a bit fuzzy, the breaks don't pop as I like (may have gone a bit too far with the atmosphere and forgot about that) Also the second section after the second breakdown is too similar (or the same) as the first, and offers nothing new, like it is filling time but not going anywhere. Spend more time building the arrangement, rather than following such a strict patter of break, beats, break, beats, break, end. The main melody is quite pretty though as you say, it's not like it's not unfixable :)

    Cheers for the feedback mate.

My arrangements have always been a bit of weak point, especially when it comes to variation (someone suggested on another forum that i should listen to classical music to help with this problem). I actually spent a while trying to add another layer (lead line) over the bassline but couldn't come up with anything i was happy with. I always get nervous that adding something might ruin whats already there.

Disclaimer: I'm old so my comments may not be relevant.

Negs: For my liking, too few elements. Those elements repeated too often (though that's a criticism I'd make of a lot of new music). As geiger says, 'spend more time with the arrangement.

Positives: WONDERFUL atmosphere. Great little melody and those vocal swoops are superb.

The advice about listening to classical music is not bad in one repect - in that classical music can teach you how to do a lot with little - but, on the other hand, we have tools that were/are not available to classical writers so we can go to places they could never conceive. I'd suggest you listen more to classically influenced rock bands (as a sort of stepping stone from the past to the future). I'd HIGHLY recommend a British band called 'The Enid'. If you wanted to narrow that down, I'd recommend you listen to their 'Chadlean Crossing'. Now, this is NOTHING like the music you're making but it could teach you a lot about builds and variations.

Don't be scared of adding - just save before you make big changes (I tend to do 'version saves' every half hour or so - changing the name of the save file so, if I REALLY f something up, I can go back to a still recent version). Also, don't be scared of taking things away - and that's a lesson that I have taken nearly 40 years to learn!

    Hope that helps.

It's nice to meet someone who's heard of them :)

They're enjoying something of a revival at the moment. I've been friends with Robert for about 35 years (showing my age) and have learned more from him about how to put a piece together than from anyone else.

Should be beyond value ;) It's nice to see that the original versions of the first two albums are now out on CD for the first time.
