    Hello Maschinists

Welcome to the September issue of the legendary MASCHINE FORUM BEAT BATTLE.

Last month’s Battle Champion is the proud @Huboi, but can he be beaten?

Just like last month, the winner will not only receive the undying respect of fellow forum goers, but also pick a KOMPLETE instrument or effect and a MASCHINE EXPANSION of their choice plus she/he will take ownership of the glorious ‘Battle Champion’ sash of victory to wear proudly until someone can take it away. A runner up will get one Maschine Expansion of their choice.

Start creating, take part and win!

This month we want you to bring the funk. Dust off the Rhodes and start slapping that bass. Weather you create a funky hip hop beat or a funky house track, as long as @Keir @ NI starts dancing in the office I’ll be happy. Seriously though, the community will decide if your beat is funky enough.

    ENTER!
    1. To enter the competition, upload your beat to SoundCloud, tag @nativeinstruments and #MASCHINEbeatbattle then post your entry in this thread. Submissions are accepted until the 25th of September.

    VOTE!
    2. Once all the submissions are collected, we'll open a special Voting Thread which will be open for votes until the 30th of September. The winner is the beat with the most community votes. That's democracy in action and people power as it should be.

    WIN!

    3. If you've got true mad skills on MASCHINE then you are allowed bragging rights in the forum.

    RULES:

This section will now only include the changes we adopted from your feedback. If you are new to this competition or need to refresh your memory please refer to this sticky

After considering your criticism of the voting process of last month’s battle we will go with the following changes:

    - Voting will still take part in the last couple of days of the month in a separate thread in which I will post all your submissions

    BUT

    - Votes you give yourself will not count

    - Your votes will only count if your account was created before the current beat battle started, EXCEPT for when you submit a track yourself

We want this to be an open competition that invites new users to the community but we realize that this should not be a popularity contest. Therefore we hope that the above changes to the rules will make for a more balanced voting process.

Again, we encourage you to give us your feedback and wish all of you the best of luck and a lot of fun.

    Cheers,

    Jonas

I have a question about sampling. What do you mean by copyrighted material?
For example I use the amen break all the time. Is this acceptable? What about like a horn stab or weird voices from some record from the 60s? Is this all off limits?

Just thought that I would bump this as it is in danger of disappearing under a pile of bugs (maybe people are more interested in cataloguing bugs than making music o_O).

Not sure I can do funk without plagiarising the great JB, (plus I am sans controller at the moment so will have to use mouse and keyboard), but I will give it a go.

Agreed it would be nice if this was pinned at the top every month, is that possible?

The Amen beat is copyrighted material... ;-)
Just because the copyright owner hasn't sought legal action to protect his copyright doesn't mean it's not copyrighted.

We are off to a good start again. Love the funky tunes.
Technically yes, you would need to contact the copyright holder and clear the sample. If you want to be 100% sure use samples from sources where you know they are royalty free, for example Maschine Expansions, Kontakt Instruments, Sample Packs from other providers such as Loopmasters are usually also cleared.

There are several sample packs such as the Ray kieth one, that contain several drum breaks from funk records. The amen included. So your sayin if I use a ray kieth amen that's ok, but I can't sample an amen directly from a record, I have to use the Ray Kieth version?

Well it's a loopmasters brand sample so I'm gonna say it's ok.

I'm not at my home computer right now so I can't check which one it is, but I believe native instruments also has an "amen" in the ezbreaks kit on the resonant blaze expansion.

Man, I went to check this, and found that my Res Blaze loops are all missing. No sound on that whole kit. I just redownloaded it, and it's still empty...? Trying a rescan to see if that fixes it.

Hey hugh try playing the breaks at octave 1 or down low.

Or load the kit with one of the native patterns open up the piano roll and scroll all the way to the bottom

Like I said I'm not sure if it's an amen. I'll check it when I get home.
