Set half-star ratings directly in iTunes

iTunes has long supported the ability to rate (and display) half-star ratings for songs, but until recently, you had to use an AppleScript to actually set those half-star ratings. Now, thanks to a hidden iTunes preference, you can set half-star ratings directly within iTunes.

To enable this feature, first quit iTunes, then open Terminal. In Terminal, enter this command, then press Return:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes allow-half-stars -bool TRUE

Now relaunch iTunes, and nothing will seem to have changed. But click-and-drag (slowly) on a song's Rating field, and you'll see little 1/2 indicators as you drag across the rating.
Set half-star ratings directly in iTunes

***Would love to see Traktor Read the 1/2 Ratings!

    I agree completely.
To me rating is the most important field in the entire tag. I am also using half star ratings in iTunes (unfortunately the current iPod Classic firmware does not support this and shows the ratings rounded down). I would also prefer to see the numerical value behind the star ratings (it ranges from 0 to 100) over a row of stars, hearts, mushrooms etc. This would give me complete freedom and take less space on the screen.

How can star ratings be useful for DJ'ing? Not being funny - but surely all your tunes should be good (4 or 5 stars) so it would be a fairly blunt tool to use to narrow down what tune you're looking for.

Or are you using the stars to differentiate between different sounds/times of night? (Actually I quite like the sound of that idea...)

    Easily explained in my case:
I buy a lot of music and use iTunes, iPod and Traktor to listen to it. So the tracks are already in the libraries before they are rated.

I try to listen through every track and rate it:
    5: excellent
    4.5: very good
    4: good
    3.5: not bad
3: listen from time to time for variety
2.5: not exactly my taste, but taste evolves
    2: for fans
    1.5: hopeless
    1: hurts
    0.5: hurts badly
    0: not rated

Everything rated below 3.5 ("stars") is not synced to my 160GB iPod

PS: Life's too short to be exposed to bad music.

I would ask why you have tracks rated at 1 or 0 at all

    Just my opinion...

If "Terminal" is for mac, this can't be done on PC?

    Thanks, Lancellot.
Used it on iTunes both in WinXPhomeSP3 & in VistaUltimateSP1. It works real nice. Sad it's not supported everywhere in iTunes.

+ for "stars" and "halves" in TSP as well

    my answer:

This way I can distinguish bad tracks (1) from unrated tracks (0).

There is no rate 0, because an extra unrated flag is missing. So a 0 just means not rated (yet).
For me 1 means don't listen to the track again. ever. This is an important rating.

I just don't understand why you would purchase/add a tune that is that **** to your collection in the first place

Look - I'm just being a dick - ignore me...

    sorry.

because you might want to keep the albums in tact that you bought. or sometimes you do need to play some horrible music for whatever reasons. hard disk space is cheap.

I hear ya dybvandal. I keep tracks that I thought sounded great in the snippet I heard at the download site then they go all to poop at some point. I mean to fix them in Ableton or keep them to sample, but can't get myself to delete. I'm going to use the stars for "energy" or "time of night" or some sh!t some day.
