If I want to set a Xone 4D up in a club while another DJ is still playing, what do I do? Is it something to do with the XLR cables?

    Thanks.

you have all that kit and no idea how to set it up? that sounds kinda dumb

just plug your main out into one of the clubs free channels on their main mixer

Thanks for your very useful opinion, but no I don't have a Xone 4D.

Not everyone has been or played in a club environment before. This is for when/if I do get one.

by the way you asked the question it like you do have a 4d

anyway, either bring you own mixer and plug in your main out to a non used channel like gorgeous recommended.

other than that, it all depends how u use a 4d. weather its as a full midi and soundcards, or if you plug your a8dj/a4dj in the channels and use controllers

again if you have all this gear, you should know how they all work, and have read the setup manuals. it all varies on how you use your equipment, and what you prefer. turntables, cdjs, midi controllers, etc.

Sorry, I didn't mean to lead anyone on in to thinking I already own a 4D...Lol!

There's nothing wrong with asking for some conformation from people have already done this in a club before.

I would just be using the Xone 4D on it's own.

in the case if using it as a full midi controller and audio card, id worry about getting a 4d. i dont think its possible to seamlessly switch to midi-control/soundcard mid performance.

I think I know what you are asking..................

If you have an Audio 8dj and a laptop, you can just plug into the club installed mixer. If you want to use your own 4D, you would not need the club mixer. BUT would it be possible to set it all up with another DJ spinning at the same time, and then transition over to you? I duno, depends on the club, how much room there is available, if they have extra cables to hook into so you can just switch.............

I cannot answer any of those questions. I know that when I take my Zero 4 to a party I hate the fact I need to disrupt what ever is going on to plug in my mixer due to the built in sound card.

the easiest way to connect your 4D when another dj is performing is to go into an open channel of the installed mixer as previously stated. there's no need for an audio dj8 when using a 4D. you'd have to repatch the tt/cdj's from the house mixer to yours if you use timecode.

a lot of venues have more than one stereo input available, and if you co-ordinate it a head of time they can provide you with separate inputs. that's the best solution if it's available.

another option is to show up early and talk to the sound crew about having your 4D as the main mixer, as long as you're ok with other people mixing on it. it also means you're stuck at the gig till it's over.

in my experience, it's been 50% into a spare channel of another mixer, and the other half having my own inputs into the FOH console.

Actually I am going to have the same issue in 6 weeks time, as I am bringing my Xone 4d (and yes I own one :)) and I will have to try and persuade the sound crew to plug it into a free channel of the installed DJM 800.

Only doubt, I have been told already that it would have a negative effect on the quality of the sound, and this is my question to you's as I have no experience with DJM series mixers: are they being protective or is there a hint of truth?

I would used the Xone and the laptop only, no external soundcards, thank you.

there is truth in that anytime you start running mixers into mixers, there is going to be a compromise of sound. in the purely analogue domain, it would be an issue of gain structure and managing noise through cascading input stages of multiple mixers. that is done all the time with no severely ill effects, relative to the equipment involved.

since we're talking about a djm-800, the biggest compromise you face is that you're going to have a digital conversion taking place a minimum of 3 times before the house processing - d/a out of the 4D, a/d into the 800, d/a out of the 800... beyond that, it's best to watch your levels on the 800 because the built in limiting on the input channels sounds incredibly bad. if you're in a situation where the previous dj is clipping the piss out of the mixer before you go on, usually you can tell the house engineer that you'll be mixing at a proper level and they'll adjust things properly - provided you do as well. :)

while going straight into FOH is preferred, sometimes doing something easier for everyone else keeps it much more manageable for the night...

if you do go into the 800, don't worry about the 4D's master xlr's and use the monitor output on rca's instead. bring your own rca cable to get out of the 4D into the djm-800, or grab one from a cdj if the mixer inputs are not available... your booth monitors will be controlled on the pioneer.

be mindful of your levels and everything will be cool. :)

Cheers for the replys, and I now own a 4D and have used it in clubs.

I just run an RCA out out the 'Booth' line out on the 4D to a free channel on the club mixer, works nicely.
