Hey I was just wondering how to set up program change for Maschine in Pro Tools so that it will automatically change scenes in the song. My Pro Tools version is 8.0.1 and the Maschine 1.1.0.021. If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it, thanks.

Have a look for the Program Change template.

    http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=82226&highlight=program+change+template

In 1.03 you have to run Maschine in controller mode. Then select the Program Change template. You can then record the program changes in Protools that correspond to the scenes you want (you'll soon figure out the pad assignments). In 1.1 it is easier though, because you can change scenes more easily using MIDI from your control keyboard (you choose a base note for scene 1, and then base note+1 semitone = scene 2 etc). (i.e. you don't need to worry about program changes if you do it this way).

Just a few notes off the top of my head.

First thing I think you need to do is to make sure that your Pro Tools can see your Maschine controller. Press Shift + Control on Maschine to put it into controller mode. Then look in PT at MIDI devices and make sure you've got Maschine Controller listed for both In and Out devices.

Second thing is to insert an instance of Maschine in PT. (I think this is RTAS for PT - or VST for Cubase/Reaper/Sonar). You should then look at the MIDI assignments for the RTAS instance in PT. Set it to receive MIDI from Maschine Controller and to send MIDI to the RTAS Maschine.

Third - with Maschine in controller mode, load up the program change template (see previous post). Press play on PT and Maschine (RTAS) should start playing. If everything is working right then you should be able to press pads on the Maschine controller and the scenes playing on Maschine should change (I think Pad 1 is scene 1, and pad 2 is scene 2 etc). Depending on your sync settings the scenes will change either immediately, or next pass through the loop etc. If this is working OK you will then be able to arm the MIDI track that is controlling Maschine and hit record in PT. You will now be able to record program changes from Maschine's pads live, and when you play it back the scenes will just change the same as when you played them live.

I will check these details later tonight when I get back to my Maschine - but that's how I remember it right now.

    Good luck. Cliff

I followed the instructions the way I understood them but it still didn't work. Perhaps I am doing it wrong? I recorded a screencast so you can see what I'm doing and help me out better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shc8USB2vAk

it works for me just by inserting Maschine into an Instrument Track.

but you probably need to check your Scene MIDI Settings. check your Manual 1.1 Update.

    and see pics:

Hmm actually I forgot about that bit because I haven't used program changes since 1.03 Thanks to Sowari for adding that last bit. VIP :)

    Glad you got it going.

Can I then play maschine live and record into Pro Tools or do I have to use another keyboard controller to do the recording of scene changes? I would love to jam on maschine and record that into Pro Tools instead of using another keyboard to trigger scene changes.

If the answer is yes to the above, do I need to load a controller template as well?

    Thanks!

put the Maschine Controller into MIDI Mode, by pressing Shift + Control. you wull then have the default Patch that sends MIDI Notes. open it in your Controller Editor Application, to see it.

so just to clarify, if I do what you stated, will maschine still play back scenes *and* output that midi data to a DAW, or will it *only* send out midi data, without playing back my scenes?

    i am not saying that.

you need to read up on your 1.1 update manual ;)

you can now use notes to change scenes. these notes are recorded into your DAW - Pro Tools, as a MIDI track. when the track is played back, your scenes will change.

what specifically are you not saying?

sorry but i find that section of the manual a little unclear.

if i can't record my scene changes as midi info coming out of Maschine into a DAW while improvising on Maschine (without using a second midi controller to fire off the scene changes), then I will make a feature request (but i don't want to request something that may already be possible). i would try it at home but i am out of town for the week. Do i need to make that feature request?

it seems it should be a rather easy addition to let maschine output scene changes as midi data into any DAW while playing around.

the Maschine Controller has 2 Modes. the first mode enables it to fully integrate with the Maschine Software. the seconf mode - after pressing Shift + Control - enables it to behave like a MIDI Controller of other software. this includes send MIDI Note data to a DAW. that means you don't need a second MIDI Controller.
