I've posted this in the FM8 forum too, but I thought it was worth posting in here.

In a recent interview with musicradar.com, Skrillex says he uses Massive and FM8 for his bass sounds. Interestingly, he says his biggest basses come from FM8, I would have thought it'd be Massive - but in my defense I try not to listen to much of his music :p

Anyway, I thought it might interest some of you....

What are your top soft synths?
"My two personal favourites are NI's Massive and FM8. My best monster bass sounds have come from FM8. People think they all come from Massive, but most of the ones that kids online are trying to recreate in Massive are actually from FM8.

Bit of an odd thing to say. When exactly have they lied before?

Because their opinions may reflect their subjective truth at the time, but technology and scenarios change rapidly.

I'm a real, real, real big advocate of not attempting to reproduce sounds especially of artists on mau5trap because by the time all the effort is spent, you've already been beaten.

People really need to stop worrying about what these guys do, or you'll never make music. plain and simple.

I can make a wobble with a moog voyager too! I can make wobbles with 3xOsc, who cares?

These are guys who were influenced by NIN, DaftPunk, and other mainstream stuff.

In 1996 I was listening to DJ Deacon, RAW, Crs? Apx1 - REAL drum and bass and jungle from LA.

I'm really not entertained by anything from deadmau5 except for Lack of a better name.

Skrillex has two songs I can tolerate

So.. Again, I wouldn't believe anything they say, not because of lies - simply because deep inside my heart, I don't care.

on the other hand a lot of people do care.

fwiw, Skrillex also had a short interview in a Computer Music Special on Drums and Bass and he also said that he uses FM8 more than Massive. he was amused because there are loads of Youtube videos where other people reproduce his sounds using Massive, when in fact they were done on FM8.

fwiw, i am a big Deadmau5 fan and an admirer of Skrillex - becuase of his editing and sounds - rather than a fan his music, which i find a bit bombastic for my tastes.

This topic is getting so played. And so is dubstep in general. No offense to anyone, but this stuff is going to crater HARD in the near future. Nothing against Skrillex or DM personally, I think Skrillex is a great sound designer but whiteb0x is right, worry about forging ahead, not copying. When Beiber does his dubstep album and all the hipsters move on, it'll be time for something else anyway.

THANK YOU. I'm trying to spread awareness but people are so brainwashed to feel less than these artists, they may not realize it but that is whats happening.

    case closed.

Case not closed Mr. Negative Unoptimistic. This is the music of the future whether you realize it or not. So sit down, put your seatbelts on and enjoy the ride.

thank you Vincente, we are all now a littler gayer and dumber now that you've graced us with your presence. Now, go ahead and make some skrillex+Deadmau5 sounds and we'll see where you are at in 5 years

Hey guys let's make something completely new, because I hate house and Dubstep instead let's make some more old school Drum N' Bass that none of us know about, but can only find at rare shops and then buy each disc for like $5, because they're so non-mainstream that I am the only one who has bought their CD's in the couple of months that they've been open. Which again I only bought, because I wanted to know about some of the history that lead up to the awesomeness that is Post-Dubstep. Which is so "mainstream" that I have to explain what Dubstep is to almost anyone I've met over the age of like 28 years old. As well as the fact that I have to explain Drum N' Bass and that I still have no idea what Jungle is. But to be honest I'd much rather be a little gayer than learn about some other forgotten subgenre where every song is either okay, absolutely horrible and then yeah that sounds good, but it could've been better. If we were talking about making real bank we'd all slowly leave the EDM genre and go back to making crappy hip hop songs with Jazz samples and basic risers followed by Ariana Grande hitting some perfect melody, which would obviously be accompanied by a stereotypical chord progression from the four chords song. A lot of the songs in EDM need those basic sounds, because that's what people already have in their head and want to hear when they're going nuts in the club on the dance floor. Which is how I assume about 90% of most EDM songs are going to be heard. Underground music is nice, but it's quickly forgotten. You can try to be ambient or different, but sometimes that just helps limit your audience. The only thing that matters is that you do what makes you HAPPY. But then even so the entire point of the original post was missed. The entire point was that it appears to be easier to create those grimy, hard Dubstep basses on FM8 than on MASSIVE. Which was the entire point of the original post.

Well considering Deadmau5 is now worth $45million, he's not a bad artist to aspire too... ;)

you guys find ways to be super annoying I know... i'm not going to feed a dead subject but I can say one thing: what worked for deadmau5/skrillex is not going to work for you.

Annoying? You mean disagreeing with you?

Anyway, mimicking other artists is how music evolves. To stay on topic, Skrillex said in an interview that he stumbled across his original "growl" bass by trying to recreate a Noisia bass line. Noisia themselves said in an interview that when they first started writing music they were trying to mimic Ed Rush and Optical. But when you listen to Skrillex you don't hear Ed Rush and Optical. So like i say music has evolved through "copying".
