I'm at my wits end here. I'm simply trying to go through patches and rate them in the browser, but no matter what I do I cannot actually rate anything! Same goes for Colors, though thats less important. Rating is a very basic feature and VERY important for organizing sounds!

While I'm at it, I'm finding it very frustrating in general to organize my massive sounds. I'm so frustrated I'm thinking of just using Omnisphere for all my sounds just because its so easy to find the sounds I want to use and rate my favorites, tag them, etc. Anyone have any advice? How do you keep your massive library organized / accessible?

Thanks in advance for the help and reply. Very much appreciated.

Yes it's frustrating. The colour coding and ratings in Massive and FM8 are a hangover from when the browser was based on NI Kore. You used to be able to just click on the stars or the colour code in Kore and change it in the browser (yes like in Omnisphere, they implemented that idea after Kore). Then when you opened the same patch in Massive it would have those attributes too - the idea was for Kore to be the central preset database and use the individual synths for the sound design. So even then in Massive you couldn't do it as easily as in Kore, you needed to open the attributes tab and change the colour and stars, then resave the patch (in Kore that wasn't needed).

NI really wanted people to use Kore but then when they dumped it a couple of years ago they seemed to go insane and deleted all Kore functionality from their browsers, trying to make them fit the new kid on the block, Maschine, only Maschine's browser is very limited compared to Kores, and it was never designed to be a preset librarian. So what we are left with now are crippled browsers with a confusing and mostly not working set of functions; in Absynth they removed the stars and colours completely, in the others they are still there, you just can't edit them (except for those of us that still use Kore and have the previous versions before they committed Hari Kiri on them)

WOW! Thank you for this information! I find an actual 1-5 rating system VERY helpful and I'm so disappointed its no longer available! For example, say I'm going through lead sounds for my latest project, and find some good ones that I for sure want to use, some "ok" ones that might find use in a specific project, and some that just sound awful. If I rate these accordingly, next time I go through my leads for a project I can sort by ratings and hear all the Great ones first, followed by good ones, followed by ok ones, and so on. Makes browsing for patches much quicker as I can completely ignore the ones I thought were "bad" until the end if I haven't found an option by then. If I just labeled them "good" or "bad" or just had a "favorites" folder and then search by "good" or in this favorites folder I would never hear these "bad" patches, which might actually work GREAT in the context of the song. Its AMAZING how "bad" a keyboard can sound in isolation but how GREAT it then sounds in the song/mix.

However, it looks like this is simply no longer possible, which is COMPLETELY idiotic IMO. Especially after hearing that Omnisphere took a page out of the way NI instruments use to sort and rate their files with KORE, its even more absurd!

Still would love some tips on how you guys are organizing the sounds in your NI libraries without KORE (since I dont have it). I guess for now I'll just start saving any/all patches that might be useful into my favorites folder or maybe I'll experiment with adding numbers in front of the names and be forced to resave all patches patches as my own ranking system. Seems silly that I have to resort to this, but it is what it is I guess.

I really hope NI rethinks their browser system, but given the fact they discontinued what I now understand was a great browsing experience in KORE, I unfortunately don't see that happening.

    Hey Jon!

Sorry for the delay in my response. I was out of the studio for the entire holiday weekend and NI's PM system seems to be on the blink. I can't send you a PM now in response to yours, so I figured I'd just respond here. Kymeia is correct. Since the last major update to Massive, we have lost the ability to rate or color code presets. This means that if you want added control of preset management you will need to become more organized outside of Massive, or use the Bankname field in the Attributes and Browser windows. The second option is probably easiest if you have your sounds all over the place, or if you only have a handful you really need to tag in any way. Simply add a new Bankname to a patch and click save. You should then notice the new Bankname in the far left column of the browser and attributes windows. Make sense? The other option is to manually build new folder that are broken up into categories relevant to your specific needs and then add them to the Massive library via the Options>Browser tool.

Holler back if you need more help with this one. I know how frustrating these changes are. And it's not like NI really offers a ton of help with their products...

    Good luck!

    Cheers,
    Chris

Lovely. It also looks as though my profile has been reset somehow and I'm a 'Forum Newcomer' again. Perhaps this is why my PM wouldn't go through to you... :-/

I was considering starting a thread on this actually, it's something that is stopping me from buying Komplete 9 to go with my Maschine.

If I can't organise things easily I'll be forever searching for stuff and getting not much done.

NI is an amazing company I think, but as a new user I am shocked at how many simple things that we need they have not implemented!

Anyway, would be good to hear how others go about this.

Are there any comprehensive videos around on this topic that anyone knows of?

    Thanks

Exactly. Tens of thousands of sounds and no convenient browser.

Send that message to support please. The more sales they know they're missing the more they'll think about fixing this. I only use Massive as a plugin after I selected, modified and saved a Massive sound in Kore. Then I replace Kore with Massive and import the koresound for saving CPU and for future compatibility.

FM8 , Absynth etc have pretty descaent browsers you can filter each sample quit good.
And as i said you can always make favorite banks in Massive to.

    Hold on everyone...

We have not lost the ability to browse, manage and find our sounds. You have the ability to sort, tag, categorize, etc quite easily. We lost the ability to do two things, rate and color code. But everything else is still there. Most programs do not offer rating and color coding, and NI realized that these features were (1) not being utilized by most users and (2) not essential with the other file management tools already in place. I've been helping people with these synths for years, and I can guarantee you that most users were actually not using the features that were dropped.

Not purchasing Komplete because you don't have the ability to rate or color code a preset for a synth is kind of ridiculous when you stop and think about how much organization is already available and that most of Komplete is not centered around Massive. Every patches the synths come with are already organized. And as you add more (yours or 3rd party offerings) can easily be put into a folder before being imported into synth's browser (and usually already are).

I think that this entire conversation should be geared towards proper file management, rather than pointing to missing features. I manage thousands of sounds and do not have problems with NI products, and it's how I make my living. It sounds like many people complaining are making this far more complicated than it needs to be.

Well no, we have lost the ability to rate, colour code, create attributes, sort by genre, and easily manage banks (as there is not even now a way to give all presets the same bankname except one-by-one). All we have left is standard filename based preset management, which is doable sure, at one point is was all that was available anywhere, but not as useful as the more sophisticated preset management Kore used to offer, and that Alchemy and Omnisphere offer now, where you don't have to remember names of patches or the bank they were from, you can search using multiple forms of attribute; search for all pads regardless of synth for example, or all patches for ambient (just as libraries enable you to file and find books based on multiple types of information, not just title or publisher). I agree it is not a good reason not to buy Komplete, but it is a big step backwards and something many of us are missing.

I think Kymeia's point is that you have to remember what you have named everything etc.

I'm a 'noob', but it's not hard to see that this could be improved on substantially in my opinion, NI can surely do a little better in this area. I for one would love star ratings. Why not just hit a pad with a shift type button on the controller to rate? That'd be great. I don't much want to have to type everything out while trying to use my Maschine anyway.

Notwithstanding I am also happy to learn others techniques for organising libraries and finding sounds.

But you only have a few colours , so you end up with a lt of 5 stars and a few colours, with 10thousands of samples, you still dont know a thing.
Its easyer to make favorite banks with names that relate to the samples in it. And in a perfect world than colour and rate them.

That said i would love to be able to colour and rate them to! I also dont nderstand why they don make this possible with a simple update.

I don't know how good Massive's browser was before it was downgraded to Maschine level but Kore can batch tag, batch colour, batch rate, batch assign to soundbank, batch add attributes, rate in one click and search in all banks at the same time while keeping them in order of rating and narrowing the search from "synth lead" to either mono, poly, sync, huge, dirty, vox, soft, or other and then to author, bank, genre, timbre and even vendor.
After being spoiled by that even touching Massive's browser is a waste of time. I have 4914 Massive koresounds in 32 banks. I only import in Massive what I need.

I get rather irritated by people who have never used Kore (and the comprehensive ratings systems), or have only used it in a superficial way, saying that we have lost little or nothing. PLEASE, if you don't understand it, don't comment because you simply don't know.

No. But it WAS about the browsing system introduced in Kore and copied to other NI kit. Then hobbled and made useless. And, unless you're a complete twerp, you would have realised that.
