Is there a "noob" tutorial out there? I've no idea what I'm doing so far.

I was looking at the Maschine MK2 vs an Akai MPC. I have no experience at all.

Not sure which of the two I should get. I had decided to bid on a MPC1000 on eBay, with one hour to go in the auction (like 2AM) I fell asleep at the keyboard in my computer chair!

So, I saw Guitar Center had a sale for $599 AND a $100 off coupon.. that made my descision final. I picked up the Maschine MK2 for $499.

Now what to do? I've installed all the software and updates. Where to start? Do I need extra software to record something?

I've so far just fooled around with some pre-set sounds in Maschine, but how do I set sounds to each pad myself?

Yeah, honestly I didn't see the manual, so that was my fault, sorry. I've since downloaded it and started the beginning tutorials. I learned how to do a new project, load in kit to a certain bank, make some sample patterns, etc.

So I'm happier now that I feel I've accomplished some things.

At first I was pissed because I couldn't follow the tutorial.. turns out I was reading the Mikro MK2 and it's a little different I guess.

My only complaint so far is that I see a lot of Maschine's for sale online, but no software. I guess this hurts my resale value if I ever want to get rid of it, because I won't be able to sell it with software. :( Too bad 'cause I'd definitely get rid of it some day to get a better model when there is one.

Thanks for pointing me towards Groove 3.. they look nice. Will the tutorial for the Maschine MK1 pretty much be the same for MK2?

PS - I am new to these forums, obviously, why does my post need to be approved by a moderator yet the post above went through just fine? I guess it's based on post length.

The Maschine manual and hardware guide really are quite well done and may be all you need.

I'm not sure when people lost the attention span or desire to read a bit and study manuals - it seems tutorials or word of mouth are the norm now. I don't mean that in a bad way even if it sounds like it, just making an observation. In my experience, if you put a bit of work into learning your music making tools it will be more rewarding in the long run.

Nothing wrong with tutorials either, whatever gets you going - just don't forget those useful manuals are around and probably have answers to almost every question you have.

I'll be completely honest.. I've always hated reading. I can only recall once in my whole school time that I did a book report.. aside from younger years. I'm 39 years old. I have an interest in video game programming, but only if I was in a class for it. With a class you read out of books, you do exercises, and you interact with other people and take turns doing stuff. At home there's so many distractions and reading by myself gets boring fast.

I haven't plugged in Maschine tonight. One thing I remember from last night I didn't figure out is that I tried to load certain things and it said I was missing a plug-in. Maybe I missed installing something. The upgrades kind of suck.. they're not totally automatic. You download a file and save it to your computer whereas some other programs just do all the work.

Welcome - good choice on kit!

1: READ THE MANUAL BUT WORK THROUGH IT STEP BY STEP WITH MASCHINE TURNED ON so what you are reading makes sense.

2: Look at the Maschine projects to understand what is happening with putting a song together.

3: Get stuck in and come back with queries once you have gone over the manual. You will find most people very helpful so long as you are not on here complaining about how to duplicate a pattern or load a sound or use FX, seriously do yourself a favour.

Don't forget that the manual is searchable so if you get stuck simply "ctrl+f" or use the search bar at the top of the pdf and enter the word or phrase and you will find the answers.

    enjoy

Damn right! I hate PDF manuals. I almost jumped for joy when I opened up my box of Live and saw a full printed manual in there (I think it's pretty much the only music tech product that still does it).

Having an iPad makes it a bit easier to read PDFs but I still can't stand them.

maybe i am going to be a bit rude: so you want people who have read the manual to to answer your questions. sorry, but i don't have time to do that because it is boring to write here what has already been written in the manual.

i suggest that you subscribe to maschinetutorials.com and watch their video tutorials.

rather than reading the manual, work through it with Maschine open.

should take all of an hour or so depending on your grey matter.

can't say i have had any issues - perhaps YOU are rushing the process and missing things by, I hate to say this "not reading" the instructions on install screens.

    less haste more speed.

No, at first I didn't see in the update section there was a downloadable manual. As I've stated.. I've since downloaded it and started to read it and learned a few things.

I've been doing music for a long time, and I've read plenty of manuals, but it makes perfect sense to me why people are leaning towards video tutorials. They tend to be much more user friendly, as you can see what someone is actually doing rather than having to follow a language that is usually foreign to a beginner. And many people are visual learners and learn much more quickly when they can see what's going on.

Maybe you've already purchased it, but I recommend "Maschine Explained" by Groove 3. I saw others recommend Groove 3, but they may have more than one product for Maschine. Maschine Explained will cover everything you need to get you started.
