It can't load samples. It has onboard samples you can use.

My point about the Tempest (I own one) is that a single hardware platform doesn't mean you're more likely to get decent and regular software / firmware updates. The Tempest is an awesome piece of hardware let down by poor firmware and seemingly supported by a single developer who also has to support the rest of the dsi line. Tragic state of affairs really. Still love it though.

it can't load samples... linn in the vid for it says it can from a flash drive...... so i take it that mean you can load a few to be onboard, but not like you can from a library. what is wrong with the firmware.. buggy.? does it crash on you.... external hardware you usually do not expect to upgrade if it was done well, it is finished, and updates are completely optional... unlike the mac platform.. lol..

i played with it for quite while in a guitar center, much to the annoyance of every sales person there who asked me every 5 - 10 minutes if i needed help...."no i am fine", "in my happy place", "this is great"..... the sounds and control of them was great... the pads great as weill.. i did notice putting it together in beat was not as easy but i finally got i down.... i think as they show in the vid there is the option to load the sequences from external sources and i am planning on using it with an external sequencer, even with m2 as well as live and cubase, and sending the midi to it .. a big point with me as well is supporting a local biz.

how are the sounds and control of the them in the electron

I can only say that I am really happy with the Rytm. It is much better than expected. To be honest, first I only bought it to get rid of the computer. It takes away my attention. Once I had it, I was a little disappointed about the lack of possibilities. I was used to Maschine, and I was pretty happy with Maschine. Now I understand what to do with it, and it is not that difficult to make fat beats. much easier than with Maschine, for me. Main reason is that with Maschine, I never knew what to do and looked for more possibilities. With elektron I just do what I can do. As an old vinyl DJ, I saw people struggling with Traktor, doing a lot of unnecessary things. I never used hardware studio equipment before and with Maschine I was busy with things I shouldn't be busy with anyway. I think it can be confusing to start with computer software that has endless possibilities and is modular. It doesn't guide you in what you should do....

    How does it work
It is a little bit like NI Drumlab, a synth engine with a sample engine combined in one pad... to layer. For me, the synth is the core, the sample is added to make the sound big. I cannot choose the fx in the track, there is an amp (with a killer overdrive), an amazing filter that almost always sounds amazing, also if I do really strange things to it and (unfortunately) only one lfo per track. In the amp section, there is a send fx for reverb (normal, same quality as NI) and a delay that is not as good as NI. (I love the Traktor delays and Maschine delays a lot, very simple but also very good to control.) After all tracks, there are a pretty nice compressor (I prefer Fabfilter compressor, but this is nice) and a weird distortion I never use... but maybe I should use this.

    Synth engines
There is a lack of synth engines, NI has much more in their Maschine. Although... Elektron Rytm synth engines connected to analog oscillators and very big and fat. I bought new monitor speakers, because my old KRK VXT 6 (which are not that bad) couldn't handle the deep sound. Now I god Dynaudio BM12, they are awesome!

    Scene & Perf mode
Another thing I really love about the Rytm is the 'scene morphing mode' and the 'performance morphing mode'. I don't understand why NI is not doing anything with Morphing in Maschine. Maybe it has to do with development issues. Kore did have this.... Elektron has this on an extended level, a little like Reaktor Molekular, but hardware integrated and amazingly connected to my brain. Next to the sound and the usability, this is why I love the Rytm.

    Difference in sound with Maschine
For me it was possible to make big beats with Maschine... but I always preferred the sound packs, these sounds were better than my own sounds. Or, as I followed laid-back luke's idea just to steal the kick from another record. Busy creating sounds, I added compressors, eq's, layers, filters... etc... all things you do without making music, but with just making sound. In Elektrons rytm, I just have a few possibilities, I am really fast, and within a very short time it sounds big and it sounds like 'this is my own sound'.

    Difference in hardware with Maschine
I don't like plastic, and I don't like it to buy a 1000 euro controller where I keep on loosing my knobs, especially when I am on stage. Elektron is metal, small and it feels like a tank. I love the small display, but sampling on the Rytm sucks. The ipad app helps, but still Maschine wins. Next to this, the pads on the Rytm suck, Maschines pads are 10 times better. But I don't care... I think for hiphop, you don't want the rytm.

    Difference in way I work
With Maschine I was always struggling with creating live sets. how to go from one beat to the other? With Rytm, I can create new kits on every pattern, without getting problems with my CPU (also hardware has CPU, I think). The architecture is very clever and I can just go on and on and on, from one type of sound to the other.... from one song to the other, without loading anything and without stopping the sound only once. I must say, the transition trick I did with Maschine and tractor works very well with Rytm and Octatrack.

NI Maschine connection in the near future?
A new software tool called 'overbridge' is created. I can use the elektron hardware as a VST in a host. This makes integration easier, they say. Maybe it is nice to do this in combination with Maschine.... or Push. I wil check this out with Maschine.... It I don't like it, I will give away my Maschine MK1. It is used too much, so I feel I cannot sell it anymore. The buyer will be disappointed or will not pay enough not to give it to a fried. There is a big chance I will go for a push, to have the amazing arrangement mode.... although, I think I love my -no computer- setup. If I will work with a computer, I will create a -no internet area-, because internet distracks my concentration.

that is a big point having a vst to control it..... especially when mixing and it would add automation to it... i know what you mean on the computer and internet... i removed the browsers from my hard drives so i cannot browse or be distracted by that on my main workstation... the main problem i find in maschine with a good workflow is the browser and the inability to reassign attributes to the factory one or expansion packs: i find drum lab or synth easier to use as like an analog device, i can tailor the sound to ear instead of searching thousands of samples for that sound.

this threat is changing all the time anyway....
and if someone asks for it, I give my opinion :)
but it's more that I am not understanding the vision of NI

That weird i know they did have an upgrade from halion 3 to 5 when it first came out they sent me an email which had the price on it it was about £140 .they must have stopped it if you buy halionsonic 2 its exactlly the same only differnce is you can import or edit your own samples but it contains the same content.

You can't load samples at all. I dunno where you saw that vid but it must be well out of date. They promised/hinted at a lot of things with the Tempest that they never delivered. Most of the stuff in the original manual is there now I think (several years on) apart from a proper glide/legato implementation.

There *are* bugs in the firmware - personally I don't find any of them a particular hinderance. There are shortcomings in the sequencer that I do find a hinderance however. It's not the best machine for working alongside a DAW - designed more with live use in mind I think. I'm hoping that new Expert Sleepers sync box might solve that for me.

But... it sounds awesome. And it plays awesome. Feels like your playing rather than programming. And it's a six voice poly synth as well as a kick-ass analog drum machine. I think the reason it draws such extreme opinions is that there's so much to love about it that the seemingly silly shortcomings seem all the more frustrating.

But.... this threat goes everywhere... (also because of me)

What I am actually interested in is this...

Are people really interested in more synths, more drum computer software, more compressors, more eq's.......?
I think the strategy to keep on creating new things is very uninteresting... I already had everything with Komplete 6
And a perfect EQ, Limiter and Compressor (and multi band compressor) can be found from other brands like Fabfilter.
The big amount of Plugins that are no much better than competitor plugins let me drift me away of NI.
The extremely big music making factory I bought from NI only confuses me. I keep on searching 'what shall I use, what sample will I take?'

The drum synth on the Maschine made me happy, because this makes it easy to get the right sound out of 1 tool

De Wouzer that is exactly it. Why keep changing things, don't fix what isn't broken, a great eq or compressor will always be a great eq or compressor. I haven't bought K anything because of all the needless fluff! I would Love to see NI open up the software and be more class compliant with midi or even sysex but make the code available. I want to use it, the maschine software and controller more universally. I like hardware better then software but I also use software some of it is just very nice to work with.

What are you using for drums? I mean yeah maschine, but I was using Groove Agent for a bit. And I've been hearing about Jamstixx ( I think that is what it is called). Those guys over the steinberg forum are really killing it with bad feedback on groove agent lol. Anyway, I like it. But maschine is just faster to work with imo.

I don't use it anymore.... but I think the drum synths in Maschine 2 are really nice, especially when you layer them with a pad linked sample.
but I use Elektron Rytm for my beats, at the moment. But let's not drift away of the topic....

Are people really interested in more synths, more drum computer software, more compressors, more eq's.......?

We will have to wait to see what NI does. But the concern was the same as last year. And they delivered. So I'm not worried. Seems like you have a set-up to supplant or compliment maschine. So you should be good. if your this concerned I highly recommend pming keir.
