I could be wrong here but I think MIDI 2.0 has to be embedded in the hardware, no? Maybe it's possible with firmware updates but it will take a long time, we don't have aftertouch or MPE yet. Other than per note parameters a big chunk of MIDI 2.0 is already covered by NKS so I am not sure if it will be worth the implementation effort.

I don't think too much of Reaper's clunky 90's GUI but it's Integration with the Push 2 is absolutely fantastic.

I hope some of those features find their way to live, otherwise I may start looking at Reaper, clunky GUI or not.

Thanks for this post I hadn't heard of Reaper.

It's ashame NI is so closed about its hardware, as some of its older controllers could easily find a second life controlling other DAWs. NI could issue a special developer's firmware for its MK1 hardware to allow 3rd party access to their inner workings, without compromising its later spec controllers. Eg how to write to the screen. This might also stimulate the 'resale market' creating more reasons to upgrade to the latest hardware.

So many people never get past the GUI which is a real shame because it's so much better than many think IMHO. Such a shame NI isn't playing as well as it could with it. If you want to *cough* 'democratise music' then why not have much better support for one of the more affordable solutions and one that is far more appealing to Komplete or Komplete Unlimited users.

I think I read somewhere a long time ago that's why it takes so long for the midi standard to change. I could be thinking of a different standard, or maybe it was standards like that in general. I think we all pretty much know they still have issues today, but it would be nice to know NI walks away from the table ready to play ball. I would like to think that's why they were there in the first place.

There are much better Themes (skins) than the standard Reaper 5 one for sure, but no excuse given here, it sucks. The whole sheet of white on any VSTi plug in with little checkboxes pulled right out of Win95 Excel, that's there even with super since Skins...
Maybe it's just that I use Digital Performer, Live, Maschine etc. and all those have different but very well thought out GUI approaches. I pop into Reaper and it's definitely going back to 2003 ... Doesn't take away from the fact that Justin and co. put every new feature that comes along pretty much, into Reaper.

Think Behringer have killed it this year, with the MS-101, Odyssey, RD-808 & 909, VC340 vocoder, and now the Crave.
The crave is the most exciting for me, nice little analog semi modular desktop & transposable sequencer,
at the great price 199$ 149Euro.

It's mostly that they tend to discontinue things in their Controller Editor software. Maschine Studio is my third piece of hardware from NI, and my last for this very reason. Bought Kore, they discontinued it, and stopped supporting it in their Controller Editor software. Same thing happened with Rig Kontrol 3. They also used cheap components in the audio cards in them, which are no longer supported in OSX and Windows... Even better, every update of Maschine installs the latest version of Controller Editor. Anyway, NI can stick it where the sun don't shine if they think I'm buying another piece of hardware off of them again. Only the Rig Kontrol 3 was new, but yeah, I'm done with their nonsense. It's why even with AKAI I didn't get the MPC Touch, who knows if 10 years from now that will be supported? but you can always use the MPC Live without the software.
