Someone was asking if this could be done with guitar rig 5..

I also remember some comments that GR cannot get any good clean tones.

I thought it would be fun to test that theory, and i do like a challenge..

    So here it is:

I have always found GR to be the absolute best tool for replicating recorded tones myself, mainly due to the fact it simulates the entire amp rather than just a sound. You have all the possible settings available to get you there. I found myself actually using and preferring it to my Kemper for that task. There are just so many more options in the GR toolset to replicate the full recorded signal chain and the amount of tweaking required is a ball ache on a hardware unit.

I find it very dynamic indeed, I know there are some strong opinions on this board regarding that so I wont get into any more of my thoughts about it but rather leave it to your ears to decide.

Some things that need to be said:

    1. I am not Mark Knopfler.. obviously I never played with my fingers like that before actually but its quite fun (although i have a blister on my right hand middle finger which is new...)
    2. I have never played this song before and worked it out in an hour or so as i recorded it.
    3. I did not work out the last solo, you dont need that to get the point and I had better things to do with my time
    4. This was a lot of fun to do in GR.. really its a great tool for this kind of sound recreation
    5. I could have gone a Lot further in this, but why bother?? (e.g. i didnt even play this on a strat, i didnt recreate the eq fully or add tape saturation etc etc)
    6. its loud in the mix.. so you can hear it
    7. There are other guitar parts missing from this backing track, but it was the only one i could find that did not sound like ass

So whats the point of all this?

I just read someone saying they thought GR was not able to run with the new modellers and thought i would test the theory. My opinion for what its worth is that it still holds up very well. I realise everyone has theor own view so please dont take that as any form of argument.. its just a bit of fun.

If anyone can think of something else they want me to have a go at chime in, although I cant promise anything as these are not small undertakings and i have to be into the track for it to really be possible. But hey Im open to suggestions. Will probably try something a bit Drivier next.

    Laters,

    Stu

This is a good demonstration of why Guitar Rig cannot do this tone. The dynamics are just not there.

I think it sounds pretty damn good!

Does Is it sound just like the album? No, but as you mentioned Your not Mark Kopfler, you don't usually play without a pick, you didn't use a Stratocaster.
I would go as far as saying that I bet if you played this for 10 non-musician casual listeners at least 50% wouldn't even know the difference.

I don't understand why so many people on here want to bash Guitar Rig. I don't here that so much on other forums. I actually get a lot of compliments on the Guitar Tones I get with Guitar Rig.

I've got several tube amps; Marshall, Mesa Boogie, Peavey 5150, ADA. I use several Amp Sims, Presonus Ampire, Waves GTR, Bias FX, Bias Amp, Amplitube etc. I still find uses for Guitar Rig in my songs. Sometimes it's clean sounds sometimes distorted sometimes a combination with other Amp Sims or Tube amps. I find that many times it's much easier to get a good recorded guitar sound with Guitar Rig versus miking up a cab. Maybe It's a little laziness, but it's not that easy even with great amps to get the kinds of recorded guitar sounds you find on professional recordings without having access to lots of great sometimes expensive mic's and equipment. People have got to realize most of the tones you hear on your favorite recordings have gone through a lot of post EQ & processing to get the end result. They don't just slap an SM 57 in front of a cab, record it and call it done.

You did great job on this cover. Tone wise as well as your playing. That's one thing that is often overlooked, a big part of tone is in the hands of the individual player.

    Well Done!

As was stated in my post.

Does it sound good? I think so. Remember tone is a subjective thing. What you think sounds great someone else may think is horrible. I feel the original poster did a very nice job with this cover.

    Ok.....

I guess we will have to Agree to Disagree. Not a problem.

But, I don't really see how you can disagree on all points of my last post since it's right there in the second sentence of my original post
And you also disagree that tone is a subjective thing up to the individual listener? Ok

If you are oblivious to the missing dynamics, digitized sound and out of tune bends that are evident on this recording, then you are fortunate in a way because you are easily satisfied.

Do not however assume that others will be too.

Hey, I just stated ,my opinion on the track and you know what opinions are like. Never said it was perfect as the original poster sort of let us know up front that it wouldn't be.

I think stusaysmoo did a much better job than most others could do on this.
There was another version of this song on the main board that I could see your comments being applied to but the link is no longer good.for that one.

It's been entertaining discussing this with you. Hopefully we can agree on something in the future. Have a nice day

If you are referring to my recording, then I will just say that at least I can play the song perfectly.

Sounds waaay better than the original, almost like a blanket has been lifted from the guitar. Great job!

Personally, I don't put effort in to sounding like the original of anything.
There are those who strive for the "Hendrix tone". If Hendrix could come back today, I bet he would slap those guys. You think that Hendrix would pick a strat and a Marshall stack over GR?
