Referring to Friedemann @ NI ´s request and since nobody else did it yet I´ll open this thread to see how many users would be interested to see support for the Pioneer S9 mixer for Traktor.

I personally would have preferred support for the Rane 72 since it has better faders and the pad functions can be assigned per deck and not global but I guess we all know that this won´t be happening.

    That would be me.

It is a good mixer. It would be nice to walk up to and plug in to it.

I do understand that it does take time to make a good mapping for anything.

If NI certifies this mixer i could very well be the first industry standard battle mixer of the software age as it will be working on all major dvs platforms.

I would really like one of the Moderators to reply here because I think it is just not possible to do this without help from Pioneer.

It's completely up to NI which mixers are allowed to open up the Scratch feature in Traktor, there may however be contractual agreements in place between Pioneer and Serato for this specific mixer that Pioneer have asked not to have broken. It would however be a great idea for scratch guys, it's extremely handy in the clubs I work in that the DJM-900NXS2 works for Traktor, Serato and Rekordbox.

All that is HOLDING up certification for the S9 is the mapping of it.

Mapping is a lot work. If i had one of these to work with I could map it out in about 3 weeks.

With that said, NI looks to be working hard on traktor software right now so I can imagine that anything to do with mapping of any controller that wasn’t originally made for traktor use will have to wait a bit longer.

Unless one of the S9 users can make a good mapping.

I've posted this link before and it looks to me NI won't be able to make this happen. https://forums.pioneerdj.com/hc/en-us/community/posts/205385813-DJM-S9-with-Traktor

It says 'Pioneer purposely went in and put an audio cut off switch on the effect lever when one of the Serato EFX buttons are engaged. They added code to the S9 firmware to purposely block Traktor and RekordboxDJ software from functioning on the mixer when those buttons are engaged. Thats not an accident and its not a by-product of the hardware design.'

Apparently Pioneer has fixed this for Recordbox but that makes sense since it'
    their own product.

I expect a similar 'issue' with the Rane 72.

    That's not what I read.
It's time now for NI to comment.

I belive that issue is if your using the S9 with an external sound card and try and use MIDI with none Serato software i.e. Audio 6 and MIDI. If you use the internal interface of the S9 for DVS then all audio and midi is available. I'd also be happy to contribute to mapping the s9.

This guy from Pioneer support says: 'The S9 is a Serato mixer' . No way NI is going to get it to work for Traktor DVS and midi mapping until Pioneer permits it.

I have a Mackie D2 pro mixer and here is how it works.

I plug into my computer via firewire for dvs.

I engage mixer s/r the audio cuts out. Is my mixer the problem? No.

I plug serato card with turntables press fx and audio cuts out. Is the issue the mixer? No. Is it with serato or traktor? No.

I read the link that was posted and I understand what is happening.

If anybody can read block diagrams for mixers than you would understand just like I do.

On the s9 the only way you can use dvs with midi is with the selector switch set to usb. This is not a flaw, bug or limitations. It is working how it was designed to do like with other mixers with s/r.

With the s9 you can use the ni sound and use the mixer fx. This is normal operation. But in order to use midi with dvs the selector switch must be set to usb.

This is the issue people have. That in order to use midi and your software together it has to be done with the usb switch on the s9. This is normal design. Yes pioneer could have set the s9 midi to be separate but they didn’t. Did they have to? No

They made it for the user to plug in ONE usb cable to get the most out of the mixer.

And that’s how it should be done in my opinion.

Yes traktor can work with s9, if certified, with all it’s glory. Because the block diagram say so

Wiley, we are on the same page because we both want this to work :). It's just that my understanding is different.

And I hope I am wrong about this but my view is that Pioneer needs to update ('open up') the S9 firmware to allow any 3rd party mapping to work properly.

This is my understanding also. If your using the built in USB interface(s) with DVS then MIDI is enabled, switch to CD/Line or Phono and MIDI functionality is gone.

It appears that the guy who 'had it working' has bailed out of this discussion.

Believe me people, we need Pioneer's help for this.

The only help from Pioneer that is needed is from their legal department to give green light. Certifying the mixer for Traktor is no hassle at all technically, the mapping could even be done by users if it was certified.
It was a Serato mixer only because of the contract they had and it became a Rekordbox mixer as well as soon as the contract expired. As long as there is no new contract that restricts the usage for other DJ software I don´t see what Pioneer could do to help since I don´t see them doing the mapping part...

the hope that s9 is integrated I think it's remote, it would be great if NI took out a mapping at least to be able to use it with compatible pioneer cdj. Unfortunately, those found around are made for personal needs and do not reflect the use of everyone. Hope is the last to die, let's hope that at least the new hardware coming up includes a new style 72 scratch mixer

Looks like we can use the S9 now. We can put the theory of the pioneer so called lock out of other software to the test.

    Have fun mapping it
