Sustain pedal won't work with Kontrol M32

    Hi,

I just got my new Kontrol M32 midi keyboard today. The sustain pedal initially was working fine but after about two hours it has stopped working.

I'm not sure if I had accidentally changed something in Komplete Kontrol that made it stop working. I have tried two different sustain pedals, which I tried on another device and DO work.

I tried uninstalling all the software and drivers and reinstalling them to see if it would reset the device and that hasn't worked either.

I have double checked the pedal settings in the MIDI tab of Komplete Kontrol and I'm 99% sure everything is set up correctly, I even double checked with a YouTube video.

The device's firmware is up to date.

I even downloaded a MIDI output reader so I could see the messages the keyboard is sending to my PC. Everything else shows up working correctly except the sustain pedal.

I noticed that if I have the sustain pedal halfway plugged into the device, I can activate the hold pedal but not the sustain pedal.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the sustain pedal working again or even how to factory reset my keyboard?

Did you unplug the pedal, unplug the M32, (power down) then plug in the pedal and then plug in the M32 (power up)? That does the automatic switch polarity check. If you have done that, never mind…

I got the chance to try my keyboard in a different pc and the problem remains so the issue is definitely with the keyboard

I just bought a Komplete Kontrol S88 and I'm having this exact same issue. Running on Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 in Logic. Everything is installed correctly, software is good. EVERYTHING works, AND, the sustain pedal was working for a little bit, and all of a sudden it stopped... nothing works to get it back. Can't even reconfigure it in the standalone Komplete Kontrol app. It does not recognize the pedal whatsoever. I'm certainly returning this controller because there is no direct contact to NI and no number to call. Seems like people have been having this issue for years and still no fix. I've also been using Spitfire Audio samples and NI samples for years now on $265 dollar controller and never had any issue like this. Would love to keep the S88, please give some insight on the issue NI.

are you able to get your sustain pedal to work if you have the jack pushed in halfway?

No. Does not work. The pedal works in my other controller though. I see there's a list of compatible pedals on NI's site, but I've seen other peoples issues with the same thing using pedals from the list. I'll probably try the M-Audio SP-2 before I go ahead and return the controller.

man, if your sustain pedal works on other keyboards, there's no reason why it shouldn't work with your controller. i would blame the controller sooner than the sustain pedal, since all basic sustain pedals use the same mechanism.
i wish it was my sustain pedal but i've tried the sp-2 and a generic one i have and neither work.

Obviously check polarity setting for both controller and the pedal if it has the option.

This happens to me from time to time with both 88 and 61 MK2
I try everything from turning off and on to reconfiguring trying both A B inputs etc. At one point it works again.Very annoying.

I reconfigured the pedal AGAIN in the standalone Komplete Kontrol application and it seemed to work... I had already done this and nothing happened, so I don't know that anything is really solved. But, I think one of my libraries had updated and that for some reason reverted the configuration to something random. Anyway, I reconfigured again, following the NI steps for pedal configuration and this time it worked, so maybe give it another shot? I hope this doesn't just keep happening when things get updated.

do you know if your keyboard was still outputting a MIDI message when you used your sustain pedal?
i can't get any message at all

No it wasn't outputting any MIDI messages whatsoever, which was very odd as to why this seemed to work. After trying the reconfiguration steps from NI the first couple times, I tried opening the MIDI environment in logic and setting it up that way. Saw a video on Youtube that goes through the steps, but immediately I noticed that that was mostly to change the polarity and that's not what the issue was for me. I wasn't getting a message/signal from the pedal at all. So, I don't know why reconfiguring this time worked, but you really don't know if it's going to until you complete all the steps.

hmmm, what exactly did you do to reconfigure? did you just reselect everything again? or did you try reset it?

i'm pretty sure i got mine correctly set with these settings kk.jpg

did you try your controller in a different pc?

Yeah that all looks correct... Not sure what else you could do. I'm running my on Mac, but no I haven't tried the controller on a different computer. If that's not working for you I have no idea what else you could do. And I'm still remaining skeptic on my end because I don't know if it's going stay fixed or just stop working again.

No problem! I hope you can make some headway on this. I did get some response emails from NI so I'd try submitting another ticket with them and keep on them.

My quite inexpensive Fatar VFP1/25 works for me because it has a polarity switch:
    http://www.fatar.com/Pages/VFP1.htm

Sustain pedals are quite simple devices. If there is no polarity issue they IMO can only malfunction due to mechanical damage (pedal or connection to the keyboard).
