Hello all, Someone asked a question in the Massive forum about how to make those big fat trance-type pads in Massive, but I also show how to do it in FM8. Have a look: http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=61362 Cheers!
Hey Josh, thanks for posting some useful tips even if Trance isn't my style. Nice to know NI haven't completely forgot about its BEST product!
How could we forget man? Did you see the super-sexy FM8 desktop? http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=sdownloads&L=1&ftu=24c8e6bba2c8780
Hello Josh, any chance of new libraries coming to fm8 that we can purchase ? I have not found any since the product is released !
Those 1,000 aren't keeping you busy I see We actually don't have any short term plans to do another preset bank...but there are a lot out there done by other people. I assume you have already downloaded the thousands upon thousands of Yamaha DX SysEx conversions that are on the web in various places...if not give that a whirl.
Yay Josh, wallpaper, what next T Shirts? How's about something useful like an answer to "how do I change the default midi assignments?" and some of the other unresolved questions that hang around here, or perhaps some feedback on the feature requests e.g. workarounds or updates? It's nice to know NI have appointed a "Senior Product Specialists" to frequent the forums; hopefully you will give FM8 a fair slice of your time. There are people here who really like FM8 but from the mailshots it's easy to think that there is little or no interest in supporting the product, which is a shame given its acoustic versatility and performance modulation options. The Yamaha DX7 maybe dead but FM is still very much alive and NI are I think at the forefront of keeping it there. Anyway enough of the Fan Boy, what ya got next for us?
If you mean the actual JP-8000 waveform, the answer is no because the waveform type itself is fixed in FM8. However since the implementation of FM synthesis in FM8 is so flexible (multiple waveforms and feedback paths, some help from Operators X and Z) that you can effectively create spectral outputs that closely resemble it. Moreover you can layer things so easily in FM8 on the Master page (without corresponding CPU penalty) and spread the detune that you can get JP / Virus kinds of sounds without too much effort (this is all the JP saw was really doing anyway). The patch I used in the tutorial above is an example of this. In fact if you want an instant trance arp/seq, just go to the Easy page for the patch used above and completely lower the Attack segment in both the Timbre and Amp envelopes, then back off on the Release phase--new life. Add the arpeggiator and you are rapidly approaching Goa-esque cliche-ville Hint: try changing the waveforms in the Operator section in existing patches to see how they affect the sound, especially if they are currently sine. Which reminds me of a web article I saw a while back, I really wish I could find it...it was called something like "FM Synthesis: It's Not Just for Bells and Marimbas Anymore" LOL
how about an FM8 (and Massive) User Library? seems like a no-brainer that should have been here a while ago?
I'll second that. I couldn't care less about wallpapers or screensavers or baseball caps with NI logos. Here's some USEFUL stuff that users would like: Bring back the randomize feature. FM7 had this and it was really great for creating unexpected and fresh new sounds. Allow for setting of upper and lower note limits per patch by note number. ie Allow for keyboard splits Export arpeggiator data as midi data. It would be nice to export the FM8 arpeggiator data for use in a sequencer, to have greater control and variety. Several softsynths allow one to simply drag and drop plugin sequence data onto the arrange window of the host app. (eg Stylus RMX) FM8 and other NI plugins "steal" the keyboard commands from the host program (eg Logic). Please include an option/preference to switch keystroke input on/off Implementing even one of the above would be an indication that FM8 is alive and well.... Regards - Colin
Whooaa! This strikes me as weird, because by my experience FM8 (and FM7 before it) have always had a sort of "teachers pet" status among us. On that note, I'm actually not sure why we don't have a user library for this yet, I'll ask about this.
Good news Hi Josh, It's good to learn that FM7/FM8 is the "teacher's pet". Sometimes, we users feel a little left out in the cold while NI appears to focus on DJ stuff and Kore. It really would be great to get more frequent incremental updates and builds though. (see my post above for some requests) Many thanks for being here at these forums! Looking forward to lots more of your tips and tricks.... Regards - Colin
Super Trance Pad - FM8 Slight issue? Hi guys, just reviwed the FM8 trance pad tutorial and it sounds superb. Only one thing - I seem to be getting a distant dull 'sine' wave type kick, that is accentuated with the delay/chorus efect. This occurs when the MIDI notes initially trigger the synth within the sequencer. Does not happen when played with the MIDI keyboard though. May have programmed something slightly incorrectly. Any ideas as its spoiling a good sound. many thanks.
