Sorry, don't use Skype. Check that your midi keyboard shows up in AbletonLive's midi preferences, and that it's on.

I think I followed the setup with Ableton Live correctly as I'm pretty familiar with Live's routing etc However, I just can't seem to make The Finger add anything to the incoming audio.

I'm using Reaktor FX with the finger, added to a VST plugin on a track.

The Finger show the incoming audio but does nothing to it. I can record a file within The Finger but that's about all.

How do you assign effects to a key? Key selection by clicking does not work for me.

video for the finger - just to check the basics

Here's a little video just to show you how the finger can be set up in ableton. HAVE YOUR VOLUME LOW as I mess up in this video but couldn't be bothered to do it again. Sorry.

    Hope it helps.

With Live I use the Reaktor FX version (in an audio track) which seems to work with incoming audio wave file but not so well with audio from a midi synth plugin. The difference is that the wave file triggers the Finger controls whereas the audio from the plugin does not. After I change the controls within The Finger they just seem to revert to their previous settings so I lose the effect. This is not how I imagined it should work.

    Ways of using the finger

There are only two ways I see that the finger can be used.

First, while audio (and I supposed midi) are passing thru the finger (in reaktor or reaktor player- that is audio channel into a midi channel with the finger in and out to master volume or elsewhere). Sorry, from audio to the finger in a midi channel and while the audio passes thru you hold keys down on your typeboard or keyboard for as long as you want an effect or effects to affect the audio.

OR secondly (and this really excited me as a guitarist with a podxt , you can record the effect or sequence of effects, for instance a tremolo/slicer type thing, followed by a reverb followed by some extreme distorted noise or comb synth. Maybe this little ableton clip, in the finger/midi channel last 16 bars. You have recorded your effects in the sequence they are played. NOW, whatever audio you put through that midi channel for the following 16 bars, will be affected by the same effects that you just played.

Now that cool. You can have favorite sequences of effects ready to be overlaid on your loops or guitar or voice or keyboard playing, just the way a guitarist puts a distortion or a delay on with his foot except this is all done by an ableton clip.

    I like both ways.

Regarding keeping an effect on, like a sustained note, have you tried using an appegiator, on only one octave with the hold function checked on. That would keep any note you played playing without ceasing. Alternately you could just draw a long note for the effect you like in a midi clip in the finger/midi channel in ableton live. If I'm wrong in thinking you use ableton live, you can do the same stuff in logic and garageband and I'm sure in other DAWs though I don't own any others.

Hope that helps and it didn't make your eyes drop out reading too much of my typing. Cheers. Enjoy music mashing.

When you said it doesn't work as well with 'audio' from a plug in midi synth I wondered if that was because it was from a midi track. I tried it in ableton with kore player VST plug-in going straight into a finger/midi track. It seemed to work for me.

I wondered if it was because you might need to send the VST plug-in track to an audio track before it went to a finger/midi track. I remembered Tim Exile, the maker of the finger saying it deals with 'any incoming audio' but I don't see any problem with it.

If you mean how quickly and neatly/ontime the effects are in series, like six at a time, not all combinations work well, but I've found plenty that do.

If you still have those problems, could you describe them more, and if you have the necessary program, could you post a youtube video showing what you are attempting and what isn't working for us to see?

Screenium only costs $15 and it works OK for a cheapy.

    Cheers. Have fun.

I just tried that and couldn't even see a reaktor channel to send my audio to.

Just try using reaktor or reaktor player.

Cheers. Sorry for the three posts looking like one big never ending looped giant verbosity. bye.
