Thinking of giving up on Maschine - Not Sampling

Like I said, thinking of selling my Maschine. Here's why. When I got it, I thought it would bring me into the world of sampling and sample-based beats. Maschine is really great for sampliing. My problem is that I never wind up making any beats with major sampling happening. So, all my beats are drums and maschine instruments or vst's.

I just don't have the inclination to dig through the crates or even my itunes library. On the other hand, I can knock out a beat in Reason in no time, and I really prefer the linear flow.

Do you think Maschine is worth holding on to if I'm not really sampling in my beats? What do you all think. Maschine is great, but I don't really feel like I am getting that much out of it. Any feedback is welcome.

I certainly don't use it to its full sampling potential at all. Apart from the fact that my instruments and drum kits are made from samples, I don't use samples really at all (perhaps the odd film/TV quotation or something like that has been known). Point being, I don't use Maschine (or anything) to sample other people's music. Not that I'm against it like some people on this forum. I just don't do it and prefer to make my own stuff up from scratch. And for that purpose, Maschine is priceless.

Don't do it Blues, I know I would regret it. Maschine is not just a sampler. I hardly use it to sample anyway, I use my DAW for that...unless of course the current workflow happens to really favor sampling right into maschine. Plus, we're gonna keep getting updates to Maschine. That's a whole reason to hang onto it in itself I think.

Trust me, I've had Maschine since early 2009 and I've had my phases of creative block come and go with Maschine...for awhile there I wasnt even using it, just straight ableton. Now I use them together all the time.

You sure you can't use Maschine and Reason together? Like Drag 'n Drop and such?

Vinnie, no drag and drop with Reason. Big limitation. I think the two together would be great, but no VST's in Reason and no drag and drop kinda kill the workflow. On the other hand, my usual rule of thumb is to hold on to stuff cause you never know. Once I sold an old Fender Mustang guitar for 150 bucks, now it's worth a grand. Though I don't think my maschine is gonna appreciate. LOL. Thanks for the encouragement.

I don't see how Maschine and Reason can really be compared given that for me, Maschine is all about the fast hands-on workflow you get from the dedicated tactile hardware that's totally integrated with the software that makes it feels like you're using a self-contained hardware. Sounds more like it's a case of falling back on what you're already familiar with. Certainly nothing wrong with that.

Also, Maschine is no longer just about sampling or sample-based music, especially given the plugin hosting and Komplete 8 integration.

    And there's always this:

Stop using the Maschine hiphopblues! You should not be feeling the way that you are feeling when approaching music. Hold on to it for a while, maybe you will find value in it later. If not, let it go. . . It was nice having you in the community.

if I were you, I would really sit down and think about whether it's
a maschine issue or a sampling issue because those are two very different issues.

    1. could you make use of a midi controller with drumpads?

2.if there was a hardware version of reason like maschine that you could load up kong and thor into and play with, would you be into that?

3.is it a possibility that it's not about sampling or maschine but that it's about the linear approach?

I would act only after I was sure about these things and keep in mind that maschine isn't going anywhere it'll still be on the shelves if you want to pick it up again.

I have Maschine and I don't sample... at all.
I use Maschine for the sequencer. It's easy for me to make patterns and **** on it. I have Protools as well and have not tried making a beat in it yet.. I only use it to mix and master. I'm scared to try it because I might find it better than Maschine, which would lead me to your current predicament of thinking that Maschine is a waste of 600 dollars. Yikes!

Keep it unless you need the cash, one thing i find is on different equipment and different platforms i tend to create differently'.

I mostly use ableton and maschine as a controller and launchpad, but also use a fantom g or Fx guru or studio one or roland mv-8800. Whenever i find myself in a creative block I'll leave my usual comfort zone, and sometimes just having do things other ways can sometimes get that creative spark ignited again.

Id say keep the option open of using or not instead of not having it at all

Blues...have you every thought of re-sampling the stuff you make? Example: you come up with a dope melody for a hook, try sampling the melody, chop it up and experiment with those chops. You may be able to use those chops as your verse section. This is a great way to incorporate sampling and chopping into original compositions. Just my 2 cents

Nice. I've been thinking about getting Reason while the free upgrade to 6 is available and was wondering how sounds from Reason could be integrated with Maschine. If you're reading this saintjoe or anyone, can you control Reason and Maschine at the same time? Is it easy to get your projects from Maschine into Reason for mixing? Cheers.

Use it the way you feel like and lose your preconceptions about how you think you should be using it. That will evolve over time anyway. At the least you can use reason and maschine can be its controller.... I'd imagine it would be great with Kong..?

Blues, I wasn't being a funny fu**er with my 1st post, thats just my attitude - if i doubt i like something i remove it from my workflow. FYI though Maschine works very well as a controller for Reason - i have been setting up templates for a while now for all Reason instruments, if you are hooked on reason and dont need the cash, why not spend some time and integrate the 2 units? I did the opposite and completely fell out with Reason - now i use it again but with Maschine as controller and basher, its fun using reason this way as opposed to drawing bloody blocks of information that mean absolutely **** all... give it a whirl.

nah man its not a waste at all... use maschine as a plugin on ur pro tools and you will see the light...

i cant believe you have never made a beat on pro tools?

i am almost about to jump over such a statement..
    ---
just get a mpd if you wanna use reason, forget using maschine and reason together, such a stupid thing

i have to be honest, but i really do prefer using Maschine for Sequencing ideas to doing that in Pro Tools.

to be honest, i would say that same for Logic and Ableton, Maschine's GUI and Hardware/Software integration make Sequencing more fun and intuitive than any of those DAWS. just my personal taste.

All, thanks for the encouragement and ideas. I especially like the idea of resampling hooks and melodies. I think that is really worth pursuing. Luckily, I don't need rent $ right now, so I hold on and see what inspiration comes my way. By the way, the support from the community means a lot to me. Keep you posted.
