On my MacTel under OSX I can push latency out to 85 Msec, where other cards cannot go beyond 35-40. Under XP I can go as high as is needed (100+) You cannot alter latency of your soundcard if Traktor is actively bound to the ASIO interface. Loading any track and playing it will do this. To change shutdown an restart Traktor then set latency before you load a track.

The other way is the use the 410s control panel and set latency there, then load Traktor and it will pick up default latecy and use that in most cases.

    Phil,

I'll try as you suggest when I get home tonight, but one question in the meantime. I do not recall a way to change the 410's latency directly, i.e., using the setup application. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.6, m-audio driver version 1.7.1.

OK, so I tried your suggestion, and it did not work. I also confirmed that the 410's preferance pane does not have a way to directly change the soundcard's latency.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks!

    Same problem here.

Phil are you having any problems with the 410 when you switch from OSX to Win XP? I'm having strange issues like geting output sound from the 4 stereo out at the same when switch from OSX to XP.I have a firewire HD connected to the 410 port and I'm not sure if can be the problem.

Yeah that I did see on Saturday, ONCE. I unplugged and reconnected the 410 and it all setup fine.

Hey shoot me an Email or IM me on messenger to jplewis01@comcast.net when you have a chance, I've got a kind of urgent side question for ya...

    Hi!
I'm trying to contact "djds", because you have been very helpfull with the instructions on the configuration/routing of the FW410 with T3.
If you read this post, please let me know. You could be very helpfull. I see you are also a 410 user, and maybe you can help me with another problem I'm having with mine.

It would be great to hear from you.

    Thanks a lot.

If you tell us your problem here perhaps we can solve it here for you.

    BTW: McBook Pro 17 + FW410 + XPSP2 + T3.1 = 2.5Msec, Clean, Clear and Stable <nuff said> ;)

@anamorphosis: I'm here, but I agree with Phil. What problem are you experiencing? Believe me, I seriously doubt I'm your best resource. :)

@Phil: Any luck figuring out how to change the 410's latency to a value of the user's choosing, not some arbitrary upper limit (34.5ms)? I noticed you can set the 410's stereo pairs to appear as a core audio devices in its pref pane. Perhaps an aggregate device made up of 410 core audio pairs is the path to higher latency?

@all: I'm becoming of the opinion that the 410 is not optimal for studio or live use, given its shortcomings as a firewire device (no hotplugging!) and its max output level. At my last gig, I had to crank Traktor's master volume *AND* the house mixer's gain way up, and still found the audio output to be noticeably lower than the house turntable audio. any thoughts on how to remedy that problem? or, any thoughts on an alternate firewire soundcard? I'm currently considering the Presonus Firebox, but would love to hear some feedback.

There is a fix being tested in 3.1 right now. More when I know how well it works. BTW Windows-XP is already unlocked but latency is directly tied to samples in the hardware section of the M-Audio Control Panel. You cannot change the Sample depth in hardware while the 410 Driver is bound to an ASIO interface and is active (a playing deck will cause this). Close Traktor open control panel, change samples and open Traktor Viola. Sorry I don't have specific guidance for OSX yet.

Personally I love the 410 I've never had stability problem directly attributable to it... EVER and I have had mine over 3 years. The volume level though is an issue. I read somewhere about a device I think made by EB-tech (the same people that make Hum Eliminator) and it called "DB Lifter" or something like that. Basically it injects a few Db lift to the signal. Cost a few years ago was like $60-70. I played on one a couple of years ago and it was OK. The other way to go is to use a Preamp but if you use an external mixer 4 stereo pre-amps is a bit over the top. ;)

Good point about stability, I have had no issues either. I'll look into dB lifter, thanks for the tip. I'm still bothered that I can't hot plug, and that I can't run a FW800 external drive off the FW800 port on my Pbook G4 without experiencing snap/crackle/pop audio output. (I can use it on the FW400 ports on the back of the 410 without issue, tho.)

    Looking forward to 3.1 - got a date? :)

OK, I might have a better clue about my audio levels when playing out. Found this article about balanced and unbalanced outputs:

    http://home.btconnect.com/woodgreen/tech_tips/techtip/art6.htm

The 410 has unbalanced outputs. The club mixer has RCA phono inputs, so I'm guessing they are unbalanced, but I don't know for certain. I brought a long run (9' or 12') of RCA cable with me, since I never really know where they're going to want me to set up.

Next time, I'll bring a short cable, but before then... does anyone have more insight into unbalanced vs. balanced audio? Is one better than the other?

On another note, I use M-Audio BX8a monitors at home, which has both XLR balanced and 1/4" TRS unbalanced inputs. I am presently using the balanced inputs. Should I switch to the unbalanced inputs?

    thx...
