I've been seeing a lot of talk around the forum recently about the Traktor Bible, and I'm seriously considering buying it. But I'm a bit confused about something.

From what I've seen, it looks like there are TWO different books - The Traktor Bible, 2nd Edition (blue cover), and the Traktor Pro Bible (brown cover). Are they two separate books, or different editions of the same book, with a name change and a change of cover? If they're the same book, which one is the most up-to-date, and what are the differences between them?

Actually, I wouldn't object if there are two separate books, one for Traktor Pro and the other for earlier versions. I'm using Traktor 3 at the moment, but might be upgrading to Traktor Pro in the near future, and I reckon this book (or books) will be a great addition to help me learn the program. But I'd like to find out the details first before I shell out for it.

I'm pretty sure the blue one is most up to date, I have the brown one. But the author publishes all the changes on traktorbible.com so even just with the brown one you have everything. I'm pretty sure they only sell the blue one now anyway. But it's all Traktor Pro, not 3. The book is great, and very detailed on many things. The beatgridding tutorial is terrific and that's available on the website without buying the book; it's a good sample of what the book has to offer.

Of course, the manual is great too :) I wish they published a print version (hint hint).

So the brown one has a lot of material on Traktor 3? Where can I get a copy? I'm still using Traktor 3, so that would suit me. I found traktorbible.com last night, and bought a copy of the blue one (I'll be upgrading to Traktor Pro at some point), but if the brown one has far more material on Traktor 3, I'd really like to get a copy of that edition as well, to use right now with my copy of Traktor 3.

Do they not give printed manuals with boxed versions of Traktor Pro? I have the print version of the Traktor 3 manual - I love reading it in bed, the bathroom, everywhere. My only complaint is that it was far too short. I wanted a 300-400 page monster, covering EVERYTHING in extreme detail, which is where the Traktor Bible comes in.

I also bought (yesterday) a copy of Traktor Studio DJ Ignite! on Amazon.co.uk. It's big, and based around older versions of Traktor, which suits me right now. I don't know how good Traktor Studio DJ Ignite! is, but there's bound to be some useful material in it. And another large Traktor book, to go with the Traktor Bible and the older manual, has to be a GOOD thing.

Can't wait for these two large Traktor books to arrive. I'll be doing some serious Traktor learning over the next few months.

As far as I know, both of the books are intended for Traktor (Scratch) Pro/Duo. The brown book is the "first edition", which was made when the Pro was a new thing. The blue "second edition" includes changes introduced in 1.2.x (because quite a lot of things changed pretty dramatically with that release).

Personally I only have the second edition, so I can't say things for certain...

All Editions of Traktor Bible are for Traktor Scratch/Pro/Duo.
They do not cover any details of Traktor DJ Studio 3 or earlier versions.

The Blue Book is the most up to date edition of the Book and cover Traktor Pro up to version 1.2 and there are PDF updates for later builds to 1.2.5

Anyone wishing to buy the Bible now should buy the Blue Second Edition.

Thanks guys. I bought the blue one last night, so all is well.

I'll still have the Traktor 3 manual plus Traktor DJ Studio Ignite! to help me out with my crash course in Traktor 3 (I intend to know it inside out within the next couple of months). When I decide to splash out for Traktor Pro, the Traktor Bible will be put through its paces.

I've also started raiding the forum/wiki for useful Traktor info, tutorials and tips/tricks, which will be copy/pasted into the relevant text files for future reference. Maybe I'll print them all out and put them in a folder for study material.

It's like going back to school, but this is FUN!

Are there any other useful or recommended sites/sources of info for Traktor out there?

^^I like this guy A LOT.
    Good attitude Phil.

You could try looking over at DJTechTools for Traktor conversations. Its not 100% Traktor based but is all about Digital DJing and the video tutorials by Ean Golden are actually Golden.

Also as you have bought the Bible make sure to register at the website, there is a lot of useful info there and in the very near future will be expanded (more info when the time comes). I have to declare an interest here so i am biased towards the Book and the website.

Thanks Karlos. It's incredibly refreshing to find a whole new area of DJ-ing to become obsessively enthusiastic about, especially at my age! :) But considering the fact that I'm both a computer addict and a music addict, it should come as no great surprise that I'm highly enthusiastic about using my computer plus Traktor as my primary or sole DJ-ing tool. I wish this technology had been available years ago. Even though I have to effectively learn a lot of new stuff from scratch, I LOVE it!

I'm just an "old-timer" (been a DJ for 30 years - I date from the disco craze of the late-'70's) who is only starting to discover the joys of true "digital DJ-ing". Over the past year or so I've been using Traktor 3 at gigs purely as a replacement for boxes of CDs. And very good it is, too, although I still mix with CDs occasionally, and keep two Technics CD decks on stand-by as back-up.

But I've never used Traktor's full capabilities, haven't come close to using even a fraction of them. I want to become a proper Digital DJ, and learn Traktor inside out, using it to its full potential. CDs will be relegated to "emergencies only" such as computer breakdowns or freezes.

Thanks for this link (have you any others?) - I'm interested solely in digital DJ-ing, and don't use vinyl at all (I'm even trying to move away from CDs). I find that a lot of books and websites, fascinating though they may be, are geared towards the traditional decks/CDs/Traktor Scratch sort of crowd (yes, even here in the Traktor Forum). As I'm trying to move totally digital, I'd love to have more links to sites and resources which are aimed solely at pure digital/computer DJ-ing.

Oh, I'll register alright, as soon as the book arrives. I have up to two weeks to wait before both the Traktor Bible and the other book (Traktor DJ Studio Ignite!) arrive, so I'm going to put my time to good use by trawling the Traktor Forum/Wiki and other online resources for material to copy/paste into text files, and by going through the Traktor 3 manual in extreme detail.

Even at this advanced stage of my career, there are still plenty of tricks for this old dog to learn. As long as a DJ keeps learning, evolving, and staying abreast of new technology and developments, he/she'll always stay fresh and inventive as a DJ, no matter how long they've been in the business. Once any DJ stops doing that, it's time to pack it all in.
