The update of “Traktor Pro Bible” for the public beta testing of Traktor 1.2 is ready and available for download from www.traktorbible.com. I have tried to describe all major changes that you see in Traktor 1.2. One main focus was to explain the architecture of the new controller manager and how the changes made here will affect your MIDI mappings.

The PDF is free and everybody can download it from www.traktorbible.com.

Once the final version of Traktor 1.2 has been released I will provide an extended version of the PDF with more content and more information. I am still researching some areas inside Traktor 1.2 to give you information as precise as possible. This update will be exclusively available for all owners of “Traktor Pro Bible”.

As always I have teamed up with Karl Yates, better known as moderator Karlos Santos. He has checked my English translation and has helped make the English version a more pleasurable read for native English speakers.

    Feedback is welcome, as always

    Rainer

wow, there are few huge gem's here:
    - essentially the number of available modifiers is endless
    - it seems we no longer need to worry about mapping things to other channels, I just create a new logical mapping and assign the ports. so there seems to be no need to use stuff like bome's or midi patchbay anymore to move a fixed channel device to another channel
    - no longer need to duplicate assignments if i have matching controls for different decks
    - maintain multiple settings in parallel and enable as needed (the preparation versus live gig keyboard mapping example that rainer gave is a perfect illustration of how useful this is)

to me the main grudges left are:
    - no versioning, as in no way to figure out what i have changed compared to an existing TSI (i cannot even sensibly inspect the export file, since the data is not human readable or even machine comparable. getting at least infinit undo/redo would help tracking what was changed).
    - preference window is too small and not resizeable (i think there should be a separate standalone app that would provide expanded features for MIDI mapping, like selecting multiple mappings and cropping them into a new logical controller or switching their channel assignment etc.

    minor things:
    - would love to be able to rename modifiers, then again this would prevent this very compact modifier state view
    - would be nice to also get some global modifiers that exist across all logical controllers
    - why is there a separation for "add in" and "add out"? before i could just duplicate an assignment to also handle the out message, this is no longer possible (also midi learn seems to be disabled for out messages)
    - well this one isnt really minor, but its not a high priority, i would love to get timer's .. well actually all of bome's inside traktor :)
    ---
rainer I have a question here actually. many midi controllers offer 2 sets of buttons for deck's. how would this work?

i would expect that i could make one mapping for deck A with shift buttons to handle deck C and then i could use that mapping to also handle deck B and D. but from my reading, that would not work. for one i can only set one deck as the device target.

so i would actually make a mapping for deck A and one for deck C (or rather device target). since i cannot share modifiers across logical controllers, i would of course have to duplicate the modifier that handles switching between deck A and C mode, but that isnt a big deal.
    ---
I know I am monologging (damn why doesnt any one join the #digitaldj channel on freenode?), but I am pondering more about this entire midi assignment business with all these new possibilities.

With the availability of the logical controllers, it seems like complex mappings should be split up as much as possible. Take Ean's mapping. Each feature like the EQ FX section, the sampler, the loop juggle etc. should be split out into its own logical controller. This way I can start picking and choosing which features I want. Say for example I do not want to use the sampler, I could just disable the logical controller and create a new logical controller for this button.

Now the issue I see here is that there is no way to interact on the modifier level, this idea will not work out well for many things. For example the juggle mode and the deck select mappings need to be in the same logical controller. However the EQ mappings also need to be in the same logical controller as the deck select mappings.

Then again, the deck select mappings are not soo huge, so that they could indeed be duplicated across all of these assignments. Maybe that is even the cleaner approach, but means that if I want the deck assignment mappings to work differently, I would have a lot of work to do.

Again one solution would be to support global modifiers next to the local ones.
Another solution would be to make it possible to combine logical controllers, logically. What I mean it would be nice if I could say logical controller X (juggle mode) should also include all assignments from logical controller A (deck assignment). So if I want to change the way that deck assignments are handled I would only have to modify the logical controller A.

    My pleasure.
Does it help? Important things missing? Something still unclear?

Hee Rainer, I am getting to grips with all the new info.
Basicly, I used your PDF as a 'whats new' manual..

Missing: some rotaries have changed (BPM, Move Beat Marker), needed reprogramming.

Your piece on the MIDI devices was very helpfull.

If I see some more stuff, I will let you know.

    Tnx again.

There will be a new and extended update PDF for all owners of the current Traktor Bible. This PDF will be available once Traktor 1.2 is released.

    Best,

    Rainer

@rainerh: Have you had a chance to update the PDF with any changes from beta2?

Nope. There won't be any new PDF for the beta.
But new PDF updates will be available once Traktor 1.2 is released.

    Best,

    Rainer

    Hello Rainer,

i got your (very informative) book some weeks ago, and i'm looking forward to your 1.2 update...

Do owners of your book will get the download-details by email or how will it work?
I ask because there wasn't any book-registration mentioned to get updates...

    Marc

    Hi Marc,

the best way to keep up to date is to subscribe the Traktor Bible Newsletter on www.traktorbible.com/newsletter (see end of page 21 in the book).

As soon as the downloads are available I will sent out a mail.
    Main new content wil be:
    - New Version of Chapter 8, Organizing tracks
    - New Section for Chapter 7, digging deeper into MIDI Output
    - And hopefully a very complete list about the changes between 1.1.2 and 1.2

The website itself will check if you are entitled to get the updates.

    Rainer
