So i was trying to see if this was actually posted somewhere in this thread. I was really interested in this controller then i seen someone mention they are a wedding dj and how hard it will be to navigate or browse for tracks with those small lcd screens and no laptop? Any ideas how navigating for your tracks would work on something like this?

 

You´ll still need to have a laptop. To browse the complete collection and alligning to the four decks the central knob is used. For navigating in the small displays there are separate buttons and knobs on each side.

The S8 is a dedicated tool for live-remixing (or whatever NI calls "thefutureofDJing") - not for wedding DJs or similar use. This is not the future as NI understands it.

Smaller than I had hoped for, and also more expensive than I thought it would be, it makes the Pioneer DDJ-SX2 a very tempting option being £200 cheaper.

 

yeah.... :/ Ok, I really thought there will be a new Software.

 

I expect the software will be upgraded at some time and add extra bits, same as the way the Maschine 2.2 upgrade suddenly enables touch-sensitive knobs on the Studio.

ok reading the specs and all it seems to allow hooking up truentable however it doesn't say for sure if the turntables will control traktor or not....any enlightenment.... or should i jsy grap 2 F1s and wait for freeze mode to be added to those?

 

Well, finally the S8 gets XLR outputs AND a whopping ammount of inputs!
And you could use it as an analog Mixer (if everything fails, thou) but i miss Traktor 2.7 or 3.0

And I don't fully understand why they did the 2x4 row-thing.... maybe I'll get it, if I fiddle around
I mean, it should be THE RemixDeck contoller, and i don't get why there are no 4x4 rows - maybe we don't need them

Somehow I'd like to swap my S4 and F1 for the S8, since the platters got swapped with some fine displays, and due to the vast ammount of buttons, the combinations may be limitless.

I am tempted.

 

BTW: Has anyone noticed that the S8 doesn't support Traktor DJ?
Maybe it's because TDJ has an other target group, or this feature will be available some other time

You can control 4 sources in mixed mode using analog or digital sources or traktor via timecode (CD and/or vinyl) the way you want.

MIXED SETUP - S8 connected to amplifier or powered speakers, turntables with timecode media, and CD players. Headphones connected to S8.

 

In addition they will sell extra accessories such as the brandnew "Nike shorttrack DJ" and the special "Quartermile extension headphone cable"...

 

not that i was going to buy it but i miss a couple of things and have some doubts:

- why the "demotion" from 96khz as standard, in favor of 48khz?
- why aren't digital inputs on the mixer section?
- can't it be used as an audio interface for traktor dj?
- why it has no USB hub capabilities?

overall i see it as a bold move forward to a different kind of djing, not better, not worse, just different. and it is the reply to some of the requests that have been around for some time since the S4 launch, which is also good. but still, i am another one in the list of people who expected this would come with a new software release. i personally feel there's much more need for a software release ironing out many of those ancient issues that this forum is filled with, adding some of the most requested features, etc. it's been five years already waiting for some of these features, i guess some of us are still not lucky.

Yeah, the S8 seems a little bit odd, but I like it, and would even travel to Berlin, if they would offer evevents like: "hey, bring your Laptop, have fun fiddle with the S8, and buy one, if you like" - but they don't
and yes, I also miss some features like proper iTunes support (back then like in Traktor Pro, or Traktor 3), and miss even more the dropbox-metadata-sync-stuff (what a killer workflow)...

Maybe they are forced to do such things in a haste, since the competition got tuff... who knows.
