    Hi!

I've been working around with Traktor and recently got Live 8 and I was wondering if it is possible to use the same MIDI controller (Zero SL) to control both software.

    Thanks!:)

Yes SL can do , you have to select correct ports for each.

You also have to make sure there are no mapping conflicts (Aka: Make sure only one program uses a specific MIDI note/cc mapping

Routing can be a bitch, but the basic idea is that each program needs to be listening on a different port (or listening for different messages, as mentioned above). Does the SL feature banks - as in, you hit a button and one set of controls sends a new set of midi messages? If it does, you could exploit that, and just manually map everything in both programs. If not, your best bet is probably going to be a midi routing/translator program like Bomes MT or MidiPipe. These programs can take one controller as an input, and route to separate virtual outputs (which then become the inputs to your programs). They allow you to set up a button or knob or whatever to switch between your two virtual outs.

Alternately, just use part of your controller surface for one program, and another part for the other program.

Thanks a lot! That was the easiest and content-full answer I've found, and I've seen a lot :)

I assume you'd be mapping the knobs differently on each program (i.e. one knob controls a function in Live and another knob controls a different parameter in Traktor)?

If so, I dont see why you cant just do a simple midi mapping for each control to both programs. Both could listen to the same midi channel and would just watch out for different cc notes.

I could see a problem using a keyboard if you have different pieces of software listening to the keyboard, but I assume you'd only potentially be playing notes or VST instruments in Live, in which case it shouldnt be a problem.

    Try it

This is the easy way. And the most atractive one. :D
