Traktor S4 with Catalina

I went through an insane two week adventure with my MacBook Pro and upgrading to Catalina involving getting my Traktor S4 MKI working. Since it was a huge blow to my creative time and a massive headache I wanted to share this with hopefully anyone who could use the help and avoid the pain of trying to figure all this out.

Traktor S4 MKI will not work with anything after Mac OS Sierra from a fresh install. But it will work if you install El Capitain as your OS. Install the legacy drivers found on Native-instruments.com. Install Traktor pro 2 to make sure the controller works. Then any system upgrades after your MKI will still work. I am able to enjoy Traktor Pro 3 and my original S4 with no issues at all. But man was that annoying.

Ok so I am dealing with this right now (thank you so much). Did you have to back up your computer with Time Machine on an external hard drive first? Then re-download that same exact version once you were done with El Capitan? Or did you just lose your current set up and reinstall Catalina fresh? Sorry if that doesn't make sense.

 

From my experience the only way to get it to work was to wipe my entire Mac drive and install El Capitan as the OS. It was 6 months ago but I also got it to work with a fresh Sierra install as well I think. Once you installed the operating system you then need to install the last Traktor S4 MKI drivers available on native-instruments.com. Install traktor pro 2 to make sure it’s all working. Then when you update Operating systems all the way to Catalina it still works. But ya you can back up your system using time machine but you then have to reinstall all your stuff and painfully put all your files back from the backup. But unfortunately you can’t use a time machine backup that is from a Catalina instance where the MKI wasn’t working. When you restore from time machine it is a complete restore. There is something with the driver needing to be installed on the system before high Sierra.

 

Ok that all makes sense and I figured as much. I have most of my important things in my iCloud so I guess that would just be fine. I wouldn’t have to manually bring back too much. Thanks for the help man this has been a headache!

 

MacOs 10.12.6 + TK S4 MK1 + 2x D2 - it works stably for me. Driver version 2.8.0 (R36) and Traktor Pro 3.4.0.121 public beta.
