@skunt'd: You do sound like a newbie, but that's okay. Everyone was.

Yeah you do need a soundcard. You need something to change the digital sound (ie wavs, mp3s) back out to the analogue world of your mixer and beyond. What's your price range? The NI audio 2 is prob a good bet if you're skint. If not, the Audio 8 will do you for ages (and can provide 4 deck capability - which is the tits). Those recommendations are purely for RCA outs only. If you're doing anything that needs mic (XLR) or 1/4 Jack (guitar style) then you'll have to investigate on your own.

Traktor can give you heaps of things. The obvious being that you don't need to buy vinyl or CDs. It gives you complete flexibility in term of looping and effects and stuff. You should really check out the native instruments site (all the promo stuff) which will explain in detail the plus points of it.

    Hope this helps big guy.

You problem is most likely that you havn't setup the correct Audio Device in the Preferences box. You will most likely have a Direct Sound option and that is usually the one to chose if you have a generic (built-in) sound card on your laptop. Another good way to go is to buy a cheap USB sound card. The best thing about this is you can set it up so you can set up your cues and stuff without sending it out to the main output (i.e - what the crowd hears). Your headphones get the output from one sound card and your speakers get the output from the 2nd sound card. Yes, this can be done with a virtual device driver but I have found them to have latency issues.

    Just my 2c

What kind of sound card do you have built in? Do you know if you want to mix internally or externally? Does your internal sound card have RCA i/o ?

    Hi,

I'm trying to recreate my (fairly simple) MIDI functionality I had with Traktor LE in Traktor Pro now I've upgraded. I'm using the Audio Kontrol 1.

Basically, what used to happen was by holding down the left button, on pressing the middle button deck A used to start, and on releasing the middle button deck B used to pause. The reverse happened if I held the right button down instead of the left.

    Any ideas?

That's a tough call. I havn't seen any TSI's or TKS's for the Numark MM.
This site might be able to help. Granted it's for the Omni Control but it might be a good starting template.

    Good Luck!

Sounds like you need a Audio Interface. If you want mix externally (ie in your mixer) then you'll need a sound card. Unless you've got a mixer with built in sound card. You need something to change your digital signal (usb/firewire) into your phono /rca cables (through the interface), into your mixer and back out to your amp.

That's the price you pay for using a digital system. N

Can I use the S/PDIF out from my behringer ddm400 to record to my laptop. There is an S/PDIF port beside my mic and phono sockets on the side of my laptop.

Also, If i bought audio 4 dj, would that enable me to mix/record tunes from my laptop hard disk on my behringer/kam setup?

for digital recordings over the spdif you only have to set the same sample rate/bit depth to each device.

    @dj skunk'd:

Traktor, as you have probably figured, allows you to DJ using sound and music files stored in your computer. The first benefit of this is that it drastically reduces the amount of equipment you have to carry to gigs with you. (An absolute godsend to those of us who have worked with vinyl in the past!) Another benefit is that, because you are using a computer you have limitless potential for controlling and being creative with your music. But this benefit all depends on what you plug in to your computer....

To use Traktor with your DDM4000 you are going to need an audio interface with more than one stereo output. This would plug into your laptop with USB or Firewire. The NI Audio 4 DJ is a bespoke Traktor interface but there are alternatives. Check out M-Audio, TC Electronic, Focusrite, Avid to name a few. You can then plug the outputs from the interface into the line inputs of your mixer and you're half way there.
Now you just need a way to control Traktor's decks. If you have an Audio 4 DJ or Audio 8 DJ interface you can upgrade to Traktor Scratch and use your vinyl or CD decks (with timecoded vinyl or CDs) to do this. Alternatively you can look at using MIDI controllers for this job. Check out http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=221

Hope that helps a bit :)

    that helps a lot :)

yeah, so if say buy audio 8 DJ, This would give usage of traktor with my mixer, CD decks, and speakers(+kontrol x1).
Would I have to splash out the £200 for audio 8 dj, or is there a cheaper alternative?

If you want to play music on your CD decks along with music from Traktor, you just need the Audio 4 DJ. This will give you 2 Traktor Decks into your DDM4000 plus your 2 CD decks into the remaining 2 mixer channels. If you want to mix all 4 decks from Traktor on your DDM4000 or use your CD decks with Traktor Scratch Pro then the Audio 8 DJ is probably the best value solution.
I think (and please, someone confirm or correct me if I'm wrong here) you need to use one of the NI interfaces if you want to use Traktor Scratch.

Check out the manufacturers I mentioned in my last post for alternatives. There are surely more, but those are the ones that spring to mind for me. You're simply looking for an interface that has at least 4 mono (2 stereo) outputs to go to your mixer.
