i think the argument about the legality of playing illegally downloaded mp3's or streaming spotify is pretty equal.

Its just that one is common place and the other is due to be come common place wheather it is illegal or not.

people always boasting on DJ forums about there 10 terrabyte collections etc, pretty sure they didnt pay for it or maybe they did.............

These people don’t even have the lifespan to listen to all their collection either.

It think streaming might be ok as long as you always have to subscribe to it and not keep the music. I’m pretty sure this method might become legal.

Companies such as Erg does something simmilar but they do it legit

if that is true then that speaks volumes, what is the dj supposed to play from a legal point of view?

just as legal and illegal mp3's are availalbe to a dj so is spotify if you really want it you can make it work.

If you want to do something illegal all you have to do is apply for a licence.

This depends on what country you are playing in. If you buy original Compact Discs with barcodes and use those discs when playing there is no problem cause when buying the disc you bought the licence. If using anything that is stored on your hard drives, thumbdrives and the like you must licence each drive. You could have non-legit mp3s and still be able to licence it.

    But this is for Canada

this is not the case in France or Germany, no matter where the support come from you have to declare any public play (which is in reality is not applicable)

This is the same in canada. It comes in the form of a socan permit which the venue provider must obtain. Unless you are doing it by yourself, you must obtain yourself. If you are doing private parties nothing is needed, only for public performance.

I don’t know what the analogs are for france and germany. All I know know is that you must be licensed and have a permit.

jftr, If you play in a public venue (club or Bar etc.) they should have paid for a "General license". The clubs are supposed to pay an annual fee for the right to play music. (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC etc..) which includes a dj. There are difference licences but the venue should already be covered.

IMO, Using this as an excuse for not implementing a streaming service is a copout. That said, I really don't care for streaming.
Do you really wanna rely on wifi or Internet stream for a live gig?? Nah, I'm good. o_O

I agree with this guy entirely. Here's the post:

I for one would love it if NI and Spotify could somehow work this out, the problem clearly is a licensing issue on Spotify's side I think NI have been willing to do whatever it takes to make this a reality and maybe the answer is as simple as if you wanted to use Your Spotifiy Premium account with your Tractor S8 hardware for example and play live then Spotify should give DJ's and producers a upgrade option from premium to a producer account and for a fee on top of your premium account you would be able to use tracks that you put in an active playlist that reports back to Spotify and lets them know what is in your (specialised) playlist and you would be only be able to use the tracks you put into the producers playlists you have bought from Spotify, say 500 or 1000 max songs per playlist and the fee you pay would go directly to the artists that are in your producers playlist, I wonder how many people would take part in this upgrade option because $11.99 P/M is a lot difrant than say $21.99 P/M but I think most serious DJ's that want this option would happily pay for the luxury... a few lines of quality code and we could all put this behind us? any thoughts?

if anyone knows how to mix, and the fundamental of DJ mixing and transitions, and understanding how even DJ edited version of the songs do exist, and why are they still producing it, and if very sensitive on mediocre music quality,

it does not do much more than a feature of a jukebox when someone requests a song.

there is a DJ software with Spotify builtin, please please install it and try to mix a couple of the songs.

First of all, when it comes to using Algoriddim's Djay Pro software, yes it's great for Spotify playlist and very generic DJ set. It's perfect for Weddings, tail-gating, house parties, on the lake, and whatever doesn't really require any DJ skills. If you want to slice and dice songs, truly have great transitions through effects, and control the flow of your set with precision, then Djay Pro is not for you. Especially if you're playing a lot of EDM and using 4 channels. Secondly, and the biggest problem I have with NI's Traktor Pro 3 software is the lack of ANY streaming service to date. It's 2020 and the rest of the industry has implemented somekind of streaming service in their flagship DJ software. Whether it's Tidal, Soundcloud, Beatport, etc. Where is TP3 here? Like I love TP3, but my God, someone needs to shake up NI's teams here. If you're going to just focus on DJ software and music production, fine, whatever, then please deliver on industry leading DJ software then. Give us something. Please.

I'm not saying rely on streaming service for a gig or set. Always have purchased music available. We all know wifi/4G/5G connections can flake out. I'd say 80% of my music played is purchased music anyways, but that is probably due to using TP3 not having streaming service available. But when I do weddings or any other event when I'm traveling, you just get those requests and a streaming service would nice to have. That is the problem.
