    Hi guys,

I have been using Virtual DJ for years and am seriously thinking of changing my "favorite" DJ software.

My DJ skills have been developed using only one DJ software; as a result, I am very attached to certain aspects of VDJ. Cross fingers that Traktor provides them as well. That's the reason why I am posting.

    - I have 2 sound cards and would like to use my second sound card for pre-listening. Buying an Audio 2/4/8 DJ is the only way to take the most out of my second sound card.
But do I have to buy a mixer as well? With VDJ, I can use my second sound card and no external mixer is needed.

    - VDJ allows you to pre-listen a song without dragging it onto the deck; there is an internal, basic player accessible from the browser (click right/pre-listen). This is very useful especially if you only need a few seconds to know if the track you are listening to is the right one.

    - Assigning cue points seems tedious in Traktor 3; can I set cue points only if I stop the track being played? Is there any way to assign cue points on the fly?

    - VDJ saves all the information related to your tracks collection into a xml database file. Where does Traktor save cue points, bpm, etc?

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Regards,

Ermmm if you have and audio 2/4/8 Soundcard, it's the only card needed for preslistening. You have to mixing modes in TP. Internal where all mixing/audio routing is made within the software. In this case you need a multichannel audio interface to have your master on one stereo output and your cue on another. Using 2 soundcards is possible but using virtual device aggregation (using Coreaudio on Mac or ASIO4ALL on PC). so it's better off having one multichannel audio interface instead.

Yes tehre is also a preview player within the browser.. although it's easier IMHO to assign a midi control to track load on all decks and prelisten on on of the 4 decks available.

If pressing one key is tedious.. then yes :) You can assign loops on the fly and (AFAIK, as I'm not using this feature) you can drop cues on the fly as well.

Unsure about this one but I think that most data is saved within the Id3 Tag of mp3s but there's also some info in a specific database file.

    Adding to goonzy's informational post:

Yes, you can assign a cue on the fly. Set up a hotkey/MIDI command or use your mouse.

Traktor saves all the track information in the collection.nml file, essentially a database file. I believe playlists also get saved to collection.nml now. Traktor does save things like tempo and cue points/beatgrids to the actual mp3 files themselves, this is automatic and does not require user intervention.

    Thanks for your help ;)

I have one more question I have no answer about yet:

VDJ provides a command that calls "skipbeat", which is tremendously great. It allows you to skip backward or forward the song being played with a step of 4, 8, 16, 32, etc

Can you tell if it is a built-in command?

Skip beat is probably the last command I ask for before I take the plunge :pppp

    Thanks again for your help

@Karlos Santos, Im using Traktor Scratch Pro, but wanted to dabble with the virtual dj software because i like the overlapping effect with the wave out put. But if its super difficult to use virtual dj with the a8, imma just stick with Traktor...

Hmm, I'm watching VDJ, lets say interested, but from from a distance ...
if I read in VDJ Forum there always the whole Mac Port of VDJ seems to make problems ... are you sure your problems are related to audio 8 and not to VDJ ...

@nohiphop Audio8 is great! no problems....plug up and loads up fast....i have had a few issues where it froze up when i was djing..but i think it was to with the laptop not getting enough circulation...

But i played with Vdj with with the numark total control device...but i did notice some issues when using that with my mac...VDJ might not 100% compatible with the new macbook pro unibody...

@nohiphop i see that u are running the TPS 1.2..how is that?

I think TPS is the best TPro yet, but there still are some issues
    p.e. like auto gain bug.
I tested VDJ on PC but I'm missing one big thing which I learned to love in
Traktor: The quantize mode, which means beat correct jumps in Waveform and beat correct triggering of hot cues. Thats really great, and I can't understand why VDJ doesn't offer this. Also you can configure many things in VDJ, but the managing of settings, p.e switching from Vinyl to internal mode is not as easy as in Traktor.

VDJ makes some big point like sampler, or the effect section, skinning etc.
but the usability for live usage (vinyl) seems much better in Traktor.
