    Hi all,

I've been DJ'ing using CDJ's for about 2 years now and have recently decided to make the transition to a DVS system.

This thread will mostly be fill of noob questions, so please bear with me.

Ive got a macbook pro with the following specs:

    2.53ghz
    Snow Leopard
    4gb ram
    Traktor Pro 1.2.4
    Audio 8 soundcard
    latency set to 1ms

along with 2 CDJ800mkii's and an Allen & Heath Xone 42.

I've just this evening set up all the timecode gear and to say i'm disappointed with the useability from the box is a massive understatement, the manual is less than useless. I wouldn't even use it to light a fire.

I got it to work in the end, but only properly in internal mode. I couldn't get the CDJ to cue the track properly and got all sorts of noises coming out of the mixer!

    1) Im now getting a message under the scope saying scratch disabled.
    2) Whenever i calibrated the CDJ, cue'd a track up, then pressed play on the CDJ it would play the song at a stupidly low tempo.
    3) Im in desperate need of a more in depth user manual, but severely object to having to pay money for a non N.I effort (referring to Traktor Bible - not dissing it it looks great but why dont N.I do this in the first place?)

Unless i can get this thing to work properly i'll be feeling slightly cheated out of £500, mainly due to lack of manufacturer input from the offset in helping music tech noobs like me out.

In short, im looking forward to receiving the X1 ive got on order as im pretty sure my CDJ's are redundant now, im a big fan of using the auto-sync button, freeing time up for me to re-mix live and use the effects properly. (has anyone else felt this after using Traktor?)

There are so many questions to ask and i really dont know where to begin.
    :(

It really has a lot of necessary info in there. Including the answers to some of your problems that you listed.

Change your latency to something like 4ms until you get the rest ironed out and see how low you can go later. Also, bit rate @ 44.1 for now.
Turn off CDJ master tempo if you haven't already.
Set your clock mode to manual.
Make sure your Audio 8 is set to cd/line input.
Change your mode to Scratch Control under the deck letter drop down menu.
Read the manual, even though it's like reading a parts catalog. (I actually like reading parts catalogs... hmmm)

P.s the software lock light is on on the Audio 8 if that bares any relevance?

Thank you for that, i have read it however but there isnt a lot of in depth stuff you have to admit!

No, you are right. It lacks detail which the Traktor Bible provides.

You can change the input mode for the Audio 8 in preferences if needed.

also, where do you set the clock mode?

you refer to the Audio 8 being set to cd/line, i think i may have a fualty unit as i cant change the input at all. The input select button doesnt respond like the one next to to it (i.e it doesnt make a click noise when i push it) and i cannot change it off cd/line.

    1) Clock mode is located upper left metronome icon.

    2) Software lock is enabled. You change it in Traktor preferences -> timecode setup -> Audio 4/8 input mode.

You're sure your checking the pdf manual? The book, at least the one I got included in my package, is not much more than a basic set up guide.

you mean Traktor Scratch Pro don't you?

also, 1ms could be a bit hopeful - try raising that value (it might be interfering with the smooth operation of tha app)

Ok, so now I've got it working what's the best way to record my mixes using the gear I have? I'm not using the internal mixer so can't use traktors record function yet. I tried running a phono-3.5mm cable from the record out on my mixer into the input on my MacBook, and using audacity to record, but I can't switch the input from external mic to line in? The option isn't even there. Why is music tech such a convoluted process!

You don't have to use the internal mixer to record your set, you can use the Audio 8.

You should really read the manual because all of these questions would have been answered already. It's not hard, use the glossary and find the topic you need help with.

    Anyway....

To record your set you can use one of the input channels on the Audio 8. I personally use input 7/8 which is the pair of RCA's marked In 7|8, CH-D, beside the input mode button.

You would connect this to your rec out, aux out, master out channel on your mixer.
Make sure the recording preferences are set to External and set your recording input in the input section to In 7 and In 8.

Thanks for that man, ive been reading the manual today after only discovering there was a more complete one in .PDF on the installation CD. I initially thought the glossy book was all I got!

Im just ordering more interconnects now as im all out.

    Thanks again.
