    Greetings.

My Reaktor 3 came with a wonderful and totally undecipherable german manual, useful to those in Berlin but unfortunately not here in blighty... So my problem is I have no tutorials, I know the basics, I've built a sampler with filters, a six-osc synth with filters and ring modulation and some other widgets but I'd love to know how to get into building strange effects and using FM, coz I just can't get my head round FM.

someone post back, or email me...

    Good question!

I have the Reaktor manual in english, and I can tell you you are not missing much. You probably know much more about it than you think already if you have built a couple of instruments. For general FM, go to Sound on Sound website and look at the FM portions of synth secrets. I also suggest downloading the FM7 demo and going through that tutorial.
Bottom line: Reaktor manual leaves much to be desired--expremely little on FM. The 'manuals' from wizoo seem to be regular priced but contain less pages than a comic book--whether the Reaktor one is any good I can't say. I have looked at other Wizoo books and remained unimpressed. I would like to get a good book of ideas--not sure if one exists.
Also, just take the stuff NI shipped and open the ensembles and instruments to learn more than the manual has anyway.

actually i just got the wizoo book and yes, its no epic, but for the reaktor noob its useful. if you get it, don't forget to go to len sasso's site for updates:

    http://www.swiftkick.com/synreaktor.html

also, len sasso wrote some power user tips for sos:

    http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/May02/articles/reaktortips.asp
    http://www.sospubs.co.uk/sos/Jun02/articles/reaktortips2.asp

agreed, the manual doesn't give much away, but the module reference is invaluable. shame there's no html version afaik

I'd recommend "Reaktor 4 - Complete Construction Guide to Synths, Samplers and Sequencers" by Fumiaki Hashimoto (2004).

It is very heavy at 849 pages, in pretty small text - but the diagrams are great and the CD-rom has very good multimedia movie guides to connecting things together in different ways, and working out the math etc.

I didn't like the WIzoo book much though. It seemed like a bit of a rush job and is very outdated. But it was the best around when it was first published.

???? is this an actual publication, as in real, or are you making this up?

if it is real, do you have a web link?

Googling Fumiaki Hashimoto only brings back some geezer who appears to do things with small bits of glass.

    Hmmmm.

There are big chunky Japanese 'complete expert' books about almost all major packages - SX, Logic, Reaktor, Live, Absynth, Reason, Max/Msp etc. Softback, several hundred pages long, well illustrated and usually with CD tutorial packs with them. Pity they aren't translated and published elsewhere. I've never seen english versions.

Japanese names are written in two or three Japanese characters.
I probably have the phonetic "hiragana" reading of the guy's name wrong.

Life's just not fair. So the good manual is written in Japanese, and the official one might as well be.
