    Hey,

Is there any chance we'll ever be able to load our own wavetables into Massive? You used to be able to do this with the Waldorf Microwave. Man, that would be sick. If not, do you think NI will update these in the future?

    Thanks!!!

It's not wholly impossible, but it's pretty impractical. Maybe this will change sometime, I think it's not very likely... but you never know, I guess.

I think having editable wavetables in the synth itself is a bit going against its simple way of working.

In any case, assuming it is a successful product (which I think it will be as it is very very good) I think it is almost certain that more wavetables will be added to it at some point.

you mean pretty impractical that it we'll ever get the chance to? this is my gut feeling as well.

my only thoughts on this are that with a wave-table synth, the easiest way to make the synth highly personal and constantly change/evolve over the months that you own it is by uploading your own wavetables. this way after you've had the synth for x-number of months/years you can still upload new tables for new sounds... just my take. it was an awesome way to get really different sounds out of the microwave. i'm obviously not saying you can't find new sounds in other ways, but this is just an obvious one.

I agree with you wholeheartedly, I would like to be able to edit them also and already tried... ;)

By what I said, I meant that it's not impossible to replace the wavetables right now, if you have some computer programming skills and an evening or two to fiddle with the tables.dat file. But if you go do that you will run into what appears to be a bunch of hardcoded settings for the number of wavetables, the names of the wavetables, and stuff like that. So you cannot actually add anything, only replace (breaking any existing presets), and even then it will be mislabeled which is not friendly to use.

So, impractical for a lot of reasons.

In fact I already made a post in the feature request forum about making those settings editable, but I rather doubt they will change this... NI may not like the idea of people editing this file at all, few people would be likely to do it so it's a bit of a waste of development time, they might intend for more wavetables or some sort of wavetable creator/editor to be an upgrade incentive in the future, or whatever, you could come up with lots of reasons for them not to do it. Maybe next version the file will be encrypted so it is not easy to play with anymore, maybe an admin will decide this is not an appropriate discussion on the NI forum... :)

On the other hand, you never know, NI is (ab)user-friendly at heart.

oh man, no way! i didn't realize it was so easy to get to. it really seems like this feature would be something not to hard for them to implement and it could really open up the synth...

oh man, they gotta do it!

i saw a moderator around the other day. is there any "official" word on future developments in the this regard?

    thanks Contrast!

I'd love to see that myself. I don't know if it will ever be implemented, though.

    hey ew,

sorry if i'm pressing, but you think it might not happen because i'd be hard to implement or because there just might not be demand for it?

    THANKS!!!

I have no idea what the development team has in mind; I'm just a user like yorself.

I wonder if the development team ever reads user posts? I would consider buying Massive only if you can create and load your own wavetables and if after a few months its proves to be useable. Too often NI's gets released half-baked. I've learned to wait and read the newsgroups. (though what I've read so far has been positive)

FWIW I think it would be a mistake to call Massive "half-baked". In fact I think it is one of NI's best products both overall and in terms of quality at the time of initial release. It has a great deal of sonic potential even without editable wavetables.

    Yes, they do.

I guess you would have passed on the first generation MicroWave then. In fact, I guess you'd pass on about 90% of the wavetable synths ever made, hard OR soft.

maybe you are right. maybe I'm a little bitter. I'm glad to hear they read the posts. Just sometimes it doesn't seem like it.

I still would think that in this day and age, loading and being able to create your own wavetables would be a most useful option and one that people might almost expect.

it's not about the money for me. i think NI is fair with their pricing. everyone has a choice to buy their products. it's about opening up the sonic possibilities.
