I guess people don't know the extent of the work that goes into something like this - the high degree of music theory coupled with the high degree of programming (and God knows what else?), that of which most people buying this stuff have no clue about and henceforth want great equipment at tiny prices.

actually Ni told us all about the work that's been going into this in the recent on the record.

Yeah, but unless you're a programmer who's either well educated in music theory or working with an expert in music theory, you can only imagine the scale of the work; someone telling you "what's going on" is not the same as knowing the level of work that's been put in.

I am happy to pay this amount for their keyboards because I can appreciate the level of work and years of experience required to make them.

Yeah I think it's worth the money. The light guide has helped my niece, who is 10, learn the scales and notes in certain keys. Not only that I think it's cool with stuff like this.

I can verify what fear83 said. If you go to Preferences>MIDI in Komplete Kontrol (standalone), go to MIDI Inputs to make sure whatever port your MIDI keyboard controller is connected to is checked and go to MIDI Outputs, check the Komplete Kontrol Virtual Output. Start Maschine (standalone) up and select whatever pad you want to use for virtual instrument or Maschine sampled sounds, enable the Scale or Arp in Komplete Kontrol and set it up whatever way you want (use chord sets for example in Komplete Kontrol) and play your keyboard away. Chords mode (or Arp) goes through Maschine. You can now hit record away in Maschine and the chords will get put in.

I feel the same way about the controllers I like so I understand.

So, you're not opposed to the product and the higher than normal price? My apologies, I thought you were.

you do realise this is a one year old thread?..

But to address your statement, the amount of work required to use existing functions within Maschine with an external controller requires zero music theory and relatively little programming.. after all, the work on scales and arps is done..its simply routing that is required to make it work with external controllers.. and, even if the software was not pre-existing, you do not need any music theory to look up scales on wiki, nor make a relatively basic arp function..(and the arp in Maschine IS relatively basic)

A more enlightened view would be that NI is deliberately restricting that capability to promote the use of their proprietary keyboards...

haha, I'm new here... Yeah, o.k, I do see your point (and others who share this view) especially when you say "the work is done.. it's simply routing", but I still disagree on the whole. Knowing all the scales and all the modes is not "zero music theory" (don't know what you're smoking to make you say that?); yes, you could look up wiki (for every scale you're lacking knowledge about - most of them probably, like the rest of us), but they've done all that for you! So, with (all) that work done, why would you (the developer) let other midi keyboards (especially shitty ones) work with a complex mode of your software? Think about it in earnest, not simply as someone who wants to part with as little money as possible..

    Sigh..

Please just go read what i wrote..

particularly the part that goes " the amount of work required to use existing functions within Maschine with an external controller requires zero music theory and relatively little programming.." This is a pretty straightforward statement, so, to be clear (again), The work is DONE already so no music theory is required, its a programming issue (or constraint).

Also, be realistic, there are no programmers sitting at NI (or any other music company) who can just write down the scale notes for 50 different scales.. they are looking 30 or more of them up like everyone else... fwiw, the selection of the factory chord sets does not support any notion that there is a music theory expert within NI programming ranks...;)

Under what basis are you endowing the scope of work here as so complex?.. Lets assume that we are not talking groundbreaking technology here, cos actually, we ain't. This pretty basic stuff is in DAWs already (and can be used via any controller), its been in synths and keyboards and so is just not that special... What it IS though, is pretty damn near REQUIRED when you only have 16 pads.

What NI is doing is simply a poor choice from a business strategy perspective..

NI added some features a year ago that made it more attractive to use given it only has 16 pads (oh, and cannot do midi routing so you cannot do this for them) then deliberately crippled it. yay?.. That rationale is obvious.. Greed.
In business greed rarely wins out.. it is obvious, and it is tacky, and it breeds resentment.. but it is a strategy often followed by companies with dominant market share... but what NI have in Maschine, is not a dominant product.. it is a stagnant non-competitive one.

anyways.. So, take that stagnant product, (you know, that one on life support), and make it less competitive by requiring a Kontrol S keyboard to use this pretty basic, just added functionality then your message turns from:
"A complete Groovebox where you can use any of the dozen boards you already have or any of the hundreds out there" to
"oh no sir, to use the full capability of this ( non-competitive and limited ) Maschine you must spend more money by doubling down on a Kontrol S..."

or put it another way.. the cost of entry for the nice system is now, Maschine Studio plus Kontrol S 61 is $1700

What part of that makes sense?.. right. none.

NI to be successful need to make Maschine proliferate... these (stupid) protectionist tactics just wont help that at all

footnote..you write 7 lines and drop in 2 childish comments.. seriously?.. either be respectful or be ignored.

Scales and chords, aren't that difficult to either learn or find out. The sets ni have given us, are to me, rather limited, and I would much usher see implementation in the direction of Cubase's chord tracks, I think they're called.
The fact they've limited their use, in maschine, to pads or people with the keyboard is a big thumbs down.

Scales or chords are not that simple. A lot of time got put into that with the light guide for the komplete Kontrol.

They are pretty simple, that's why 7 year olds and younger start committing them to memory in their music exams. Now that does NOT mean the light guide is not useful, but please, adding flats and sharps as you go up or down from C is hardly rocket science.

Their are plenty of apps or programs to use to supplant those kind of features and use in your daw. I'd take a look at these:
    -chordpoly pad
    -chordz by CodeFN42
    -sundog scale studio
    -tonespace
    -sundog scale studio
    cales (free)

Tons of ipad apps, if anyone has one.

But it's not limited to the Maschine pads or the Komplete Kontrol necessarily, anymore. Check my previous post....if you select your own MIDI keyboard in the MIDI In preferences of the Komplete Kontrol standalone software then select Komplete Kontrol Virtual Output in the MIDI Out of the preferences, you are able to play and record chords, scales, Arps in Maschine standalone to whatever pad is selected.

I am hoping this is tongue in cheek...?

Scales and chords are actually very straightforward, and having lights come up is hardly difficult engineering ..lol

Anyway, for those struggling with scales and chords, learn C and Amin (white notes only) then transpose to major or minor key of choice.. The chords, well are simple as pie, but it takes an ear to appreciate and develop inversions.. (which is why we need custom chord sets in Maschine)
