Hi to all, I'm thinking to install vista in my notebook .
    I'm a kore 2 user.
What do you think? it's bad idea or a good idea?
I've got an acer 1,66 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 160 HDD.
    Any suggest is welcome :)

    Thanks,

    Khenzo:D

I'm running Vista on my machine and am pretty happy with it -- Kore 2, etc. running just fine. But if you've got a machine on which you're happy with XP, I don't see why you'd upgrade and risk compatibility problems. More critical:

    * what's the onboard graphics on your Acer?
    * what audio card are you using?
    * do you have additional hardware you'll need to support?

    THanks for answer me:

    -GC it'nvidia geforce go 7300
    -Audio Cards : 1) kore 1 controller 2 ) CME UF 400e
    -no additional hardware

Vista uses more cpu/ram itselfs than xp?

GeForce Go 7300 should be sufficient. I'm using the Kore controller. Only question mark is that CME FireWire card; I'd check with them.

Vista uses more RAM than XP, but by tweaking your system (as with XP) you can reduce memory usage by disabling services, etc. I need to actually do some memory comparisons with Aero off; that's the largest memory suck. It's nothing huge, though; I don't know that it'd necessarily be a deal breaker.

CPU -- no, I don't think so. Recent benchmarks show performance as being equivalent.

RAM without tweaking? Definitely- about double that of XP. Microsoft's stated minimums for both of them's horribly optimistic- for an XP box, I call 512 MB a minimum, and for Vista, 1 GB.

Right, but Khenzo has a 3GB system. I'm running Vista on a 2GB system, and it's perfectly fine doing some fairly intensive music and graphics work. I mean, thing is, if you've got a 1GB system I'm not sure what you're doing spending money on Vista, anyway; you should be out buying upgrade (or buying more memory).

Saying Vista requires "double" the RAM of XP is, well, wrong. First, I wouldn't run either XP or Vista without going in and disabling some services to clear up memory. Second, a lot of this is a misunderstanding because the way Vista allocates and *reports* memory is different -- decent explanation here:

    http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html

I'd love to get some harder numbers on actual Vista memory usage; it seems to require a little more overhead, but it's not actually "double." I'm actually on the phone with Microsoft tomorrow trying to talk to some of their engineers. This is clearly an issue we should try to resolve. I have various complaints about Vista, but they're a little more complex than the way this is being reported in the media.

Anyway, Khenzo, bottom line: if you're happy on XP, stick with XP. I'd upgrade to Vista when you upgrade machines. But at the same time, there's no reason to be afraid of Vista.

Thanks Peter for answer me. It's going to be a interesting post. I'm happy with xp , but I have read somewhere that vista uses better Ram than Xp = more performance... so I was thinking to upgrade... now I will wait to have more vista users comments. Thanks to all Guys. :)

Hi Khenzo. Is your Acer 1.66 GHz duo core or single core?

Acer 1.66 Duo Core. Identical spec to mine except I've only 2Gb RAM. I bought my laptop specifically for live use - couldn't get anyone to sell me a system with XP. Got Vista, had immediate problems the older VSTis that I use even before I got the Kore software on there. The Kore stuff crawled - but no crashes. Thought I'd get XP on there and see what happened. Contacted Acer who said I'd void the warranty if I wrecked something as I took Vista off and put XP on - didn't know if that was true or not. I bought XP a while ago as I was having audio problems on my desktop system with 98 and a techie friend said it would sort everything - it did, right away. In the end I returned to the shop I got the laptop in with my XP disk and got them to install it (for a fixed £50 fee). They guaranteed they'd get it working with all of the proper Acer drivers installed or they'd refund the lot. Took them two weeks and they had to bring a techie in from their head office but I got it back and it runs like a dream. If you've XP on there already, keep it on there.

And that's exactly my point. If you aren't using large sample libraries, you can get by with 512 MB of RAM with a XP machine- I did until a couple years ago. Try that with a Vista machine... I'm waiting.
And I'll disagree here as well. The only things I have disabled on my machine are indexing and any form of power management. Besides that, it's a stock XP install- eye candy and all.
