Yeah, i forgot to mention shielding, good idea! And a better quality cable, does it make a big difference? I tried the behringer MIC 200 and it does give me a lot of gain, but unfortunately it also adds some noise! Do you think that a change for a better tube would help?

tube quality is normally not an issue. You could use a tube with a lower gain, this would obviously also lower the noise level, but you can get the same result bij lowering the gain on the MIC200.

The cable between your guitar and the preamp, and the shielding of the electronics in your guitar can make a difference.

The closer to the source you can add gain, the least chances on noise. So an active pickup or a guitar with an internal preamp will be less niosy than a passive pickup with a long cheap cable.

I think the whole issue has a lot to do with the fact that modeling a hi-gain amp is much more complex than it seems, and currently the software only comes close if they add a lot of gain. I think the actual gain ratio of let say a modeled rectifier is much higher than that of the actual model.

    Any thoughts on that?
