A little while ago, I bought an NI Essentials box from a local through Craigslist. He'd registered it once. I paid $250. Fair price. I went home and tried to install it on my laptop thinking I'd later be able to use the external hardrive hooked to my notebook to my studio computer which has no DVD drive and is not online. Well, it didn't work. Anyone who has tried to install an NI product can guess why. It installed fine on my laptop, where I didn't need it. I needed it to install to my ext. HD so I could transfer it to my studio machine. Well things just don't work that simply. After weeks of struggling to construct a work around, I gave up. I reposted the box for sale at the same price of $250. It sold quickly, being a desirable product, but after a few days the buyer called me and told me that he couldn't register the software. He told me that he contacted NI and because the software was an editorial version designed for software review, the additional registration didn't apply. I'm a stand up guy so I gave the guy a refund. But now here I am with $250 worth of nothing. I can't register it or sell it. I'm out $250. This is bullshit. The same process worked fine with Ableton Live 6. I loaded everything onto my ext. harddrive from my laptop and hooked the ext. HD to my main computer with no problems whatsoever. Same goes for my Line 6 TonePort UX2. Even Nuendo worked fine with this method.

NI has lost a future customer in me. It's a shame. I love the sound of their products but the difficulty in their installation process has turned me away. A note to NI copo:

Stop assuming that every installation is bootlegged. Ask for a serial number and give it two opportunities to install. Don't require all the NI Service Center bullshit. People just want to load and roll. It shouldn't be that tough. I think it's safe to say that more producers are using Live than NI products and the fact that thier product is easier, by a long shot, to install should be a evidence of a problem in the NI camp. It only takes a few minutes of trolling these forums to realize that alot of guys are having trouble with installations. My solution?

Monitor activity and make product installation easier. That is all.

    Hello Z33,

unfortunately you will not be able to install our products on one computer and just move the data to another computer without a re-installation. This is not only true for our copy protection which takes a fingerprint of essential hardware components of the host computer, but also for certain registry entries the installer is creating (e.g. library path). I do not know many software which would be run the way you describe.

Regarding the license transfer you request, please contact our registration support and ask there to let them remove your product registration, so that the new user can activate the software.

And exactly how long does this process take? I've been waiting since the 4th to have my copy of Guitar Rig 2 registration deactivated so I can sell it and so far nothing!

    Hi,

sorry for the long waiting time. As I can see the serial number has been removed from your account Yesterday, so that the new user can activate the product now.
