So guys, hate to bring it up again, but
has anyone found an aplication where you can tag flac files ratings and show up in Traktor ?
I use Mediamonkey but the ratings doesnt update.
I have read at the bible that ratings in flac files are stored in vorbis comments like this :
    255 = 5 Sterne
    204 = 4 sterne etc etc.

Thanks for that info loopbg. I think I'll be moving to tue Flac world from now on.

What I wondered was - is there any point in converting a wav to a Flac file? Are they both totally lossless?

I too will be shopping elsewhere other than beatport because they don't support Flac.

You can use several aplycations for this.
You can use dbpower converter (which is actually free for converting wav to flac)
or you can use the DOS bassed aplycation of flac.exe also free.
And yes they are both lossless.

    Ah thanks for the info!

I have no idea then why on earth places like beatport would be selling wavs and not flac files!

If they both have the same quality, yet Flac is smaller in size and holds metadata better, then why on earth would you use wavs?

The problem is that most people is still "in the dark" as you were before reading this thread but maybe the advantages over WAV will spread and FLAC will be king in the future, who knows.

Another format worth considering is AIFF (esp if you use a Mac); AIFF files can store standard ID3 tags, including cover art.

AIFF is more widely supported and non-proprietary, which means you aren't locked to the Mac platform.

    AIFF is bigger of course.

P.S. sorry to the original poster for veering off topic.

agree on mp3tag, really good stuff.

I'm using WMA Lossless for a very long time now, but if I would start a new I would directly start with FLAC.
I'm pretty sure that one day I will convert everything from WMA lossless to FLAC.

It is pretty pointless to convert your MP3's (or any lossy compression) to FLAC. You should never do that.

AIFF non-proprieatry? AIFF is to apple what WAV is to Microsoft!

AIFF is the exact same format you'll get when you pull audio directly off a CD, actually. It also has room for header data, etc to be applied to it, but will take up the same amount of disc space as a WAV file. I am not sure why folks don't use AIFF more often, given that its just as useable (well, more, since it can hold tags), but its seemingly here to stay.

I think the only reason that places like Beatport don't offer FLAC is that it is not compatible with iTunes and possibly other digital audio player programs, and Apple seems very reticent to add support for FLAC to iTunes (a poor choice in my eyes, I don't need iTunes to support every single audio format ever, but it'd be nice to have more than just WAV and AIFF for losssless formats.

So yeah, if you're on a Mac, the next time you pop a CD into your drive, just copy the files off it, and see what data is already embedded into them (usually iTunes will need to read the disc in order for the data to be made available, but you don;t have to rip the disc at that time). You should end up with perfect 44.1k/16bit audio files, with at the minimum, artist and album names, along with track numbers, and possibly the same set of ID3 tags you'd end up with normally.

Perhaps "non-proprietary" was a bad term to use, but it is certainly more widely supported on other platforms than Apple lossless.

AIFF's work on a wide range of hardware (e.g. Pioneer CDJs) and software (e.g. Traktor and Serato on Mac and Windows - you can even play them on Linux).

AIFF was developed by Apple, but is (like WAV) a simple wrapper for PCM audio data (the same data you get on a CD).

As far as I know there are no copyright or licensing restrictions on the use of AIFF.

As I said earlier it is a good choice for Mac users. I don't know of any other uncompressed format that (a) works in iTunes (used by most folk to manage their music collections) (b) can store meta data and cover art (c) works on a wide range of other platforms as mentioned above.

    Rekordbox

Rekordbox can't even read AIFF meta data. It will play the file, but no art work, title of artist are read from the ID3 tag information stored in an AIFF.

Thats a pity; I read over on the Pioneer forums that AIFF tag support is something they are "working on".

I've used AIFF's via a USB stick on a CDJ-2000, but now you've said that I'm not entirely sure whether the CDJ-2000 displayed the artwork / meta data.

    FLAC Bug....

Well, Bringing up the FLAC Bug again... Gerr!

I finally got around to testing out some of my FLAC conversions and unfortunately the 20ms is a deal breaker for me…
Most of my downloaded wav’s from Beatport start on the one and having them skip the first bar when analyzing and gridding is a real setback for setting the Cue Marker. (For me anyway…)

I hope they fix it soon…. It’s back to m4a lossless for me. As much as I do not want to rely on iTunes/QuickTime codec’s (And Traktor does not recommend m4a) I will have to chance the uncertainty of this working since Traktor will Analyze these files better.
    ---
Sratch that.... I just re-read the post and I see the bug is sorted out in TP2...
Looks like I'm diving into TP2 and re-analizing.

    Thanks,
    Eccentric

You can use MP3 tag to convert 5 based ratings to 255 base ratings.
This is a bug in Traktor, I reported this bug 2 years ago and recently again. I hope they finaly understood what the problem is, and solve it.
I have this issue in my WMA files, wich is also 0-5 based rating and Traktor does not translate into 0-255 based rating (Traktor uses 0-255 based rating).
I now need to convert each time my ratings after syncing.
Wich is very anoying because this way my files change internaly and I need to resync and backup 650GB of data each time !

    thank you for the answer.
My problem is similar since i use Mediamonkey to listen and tag all of my filles.
Then, in the flacs, i have to open Traktor side-by-side with mediamonkey and do the rating again manualy to Traktor so as to reflect the same results in both libraries.
Can you please ellaborate more on how the mp3tag programm changes the rating based system ?
Will i be able to load my flac files to it (already rated) and then change/sync them with the comments Traktor uses ?
    Again, thanx

Another Bug I've noticed w/ FLAC Taggin in Traktor is that comments do not come through... into Traktor.
I start all of my comments with the date I purchased the tracks so I have a timeline as to when I've downloaded somthing. Even though I add the comments to the tag I have to re-tag them in traktor due to traktor not reading the FLAC Comment. Once I add it in Traktor the ID3 Tag dosn't change. A new metadata is not added but somthing is updated / written back to the tag in the track for the two to sinc.... Odd....
