    Hey Guys,

Here's my set up... was wondering if anyone had any insight in how a MIDI cable might offer more/deeper/simpler options. Specifically how maschine plugged in to my audio interface via midi will have an effect. thanks for any feedback.

    relevant equipment:

    Imac 27 with 12gb RAM.
Presonus Firebox with a midi snake thing
    Axiom 49
    Apc40
    Maschine
    NS7fx maybe?

good question... wondering if its obsolete by now unless you have actual hardware synths.

A midi cable is just a simple "dumb connection" between any two midi devices. The only reason to use one rather than plugging in your MIDI device via USB cable to save USB ports. MIDI doesn't carry audio, or any data other than MIDI notes, and doesn't transmit power (so some devices will need a power cable as well if they are connected via MIDI rather than USB).

Since you can chain several MIDI devices, if they are devices that you have plugged in already, you can save on USB ports, but otherwise, it won't help (or hinder) anything.

It won't do anything with your setup. I use external MIDI between my Kore controller and Maschine for external sync purposes- I can run both Kore and Maschine as standalones and sync them up that way.

Why do I run them both as standalones? Load balancing- each goes on its own core that way.

That's my live setup. For recording, any modern DAW does a good job of core balancing, so it's not needed.
