OK, Traktor people: engineers, mechanics, technicians, controllers… whatever.

I just returned from g Lounge - the place where the DJ is…Dr. Brooks.

So, make yourself comfortable, relax and listen to the story.

First of all, allow me to tell you how I imagined Dr. Brooks: medium height, around 50s, somehow bold, somehow fat…

Now the shock of my life was when I met him: a young African-American in his 20s tall, slim… My gosh! Why the heck I thought he’s 50, bold… Well….

Now, let’s see what happened. Errr… if you think Dr. Brooks is an expert, than… you are right. He IS. I never imagined that beatmaching two songs can be done in few SECONDS – usually less than ten. And yes, he was dancing all the time.

His working with Traktor was so smooth… a walk in the park. No stress, no panic, nothing.

In few hours I learned a lot, a… LOT. Not only about Traktor’s functions, but also about crowd reading, songs’ selection and much more.

As any expert, he has expert tools. One of those tools is a gorgeous ShuttlePRO V2 USB Controller

About 80% of the function of the mouse now are taken by the controller. Now you definitely can work with… TWO hands, which is – obviously - veeeeery different than working with ONE hand. A heck of a lot easier work for the DJ.

What else? Not much; just saw that Traktor WORKS in a live performance. And believe me it works very well. Errr, in the hands of a whiz, that is.

I feel very lucky that two major NY Traktor DJs took their time to share their knowledge with a rookie… me.

Thank you Dr. Brooks and thank you RoxyDJJulio.

And thank you… Internet, because without you…

    DJ Daniel NY

@bazac (and all.) You are too kind. :)

Yep folks, he stopped by and hung out for a while. And after meeting and talking with him, I understand his line of questioning here.

Even though it was a crappy night (yucky weather, light turnout) this probably made it better for him to be there because I was able to spend more time focusing on him and not really worrying about having a killer set.

I always enjoy when a fellow Traktor user stops by. Or when I go check out other users - we get to learn stuff off of each other.

And it's also great to be in NYC where you can go out and find some working DJ's using Traktor.

Oh and one correction, I'm not in my 20's. ;) I'm well into my 30's - I'm 37  But I'm not complaining.

Now to get RoxyDJJulio ready for the Roxy with Traktor and my evil plan will be complete - moohoohaha!

hi, unfortunately I don't understand everything you wrote, but bazac, If I unterstand you right, you meant with "beatmatching" the traktor function to mix the begin of an new song with an similar rhythm in the same speed in the end of another song, by sync the two songs.

I use this function (english "Beatmatching?") only when I play techno, house or dance music.
Most I play party music (70s, 80s, oldies etc.), so most of the time (95%) I don't work with sync.

@ writerx; “unfortunately I don't understand everything you wrote, but bazac,”

I apologize; English is not my first language but the… 6th. So, many times German grammar and French syntax mixes with Spanish gizmos and the results is… well, the way I’m writing in English. Sorry again.

@ writerx; “If I unterstand [sic] you right, you meant with "beatmatching" the traktor function to mix the begin of an new song with an similar rhythm in the same speed in the end of another song, by sync the two songs.”

Yes, that’s what I meant by “beatmatching” What do YOU mean by “beatmatching”?

@ writerx; “I use this function (english [sic] "Beatmatching?")

Is my English so poor that you have to specify that “Beatmatching” is in… English. Oh, my gosh!

@ writerx; “Most I play party music (70s, 80s, oldies etc.), so most of the time (95%) I don't work with sync.”

You can also beatmatch… manually, not only using Traktor’s “Sync” button.

@ writerx; “unfortunately I don't understand everything you wrote, but bazac,”

Well, it’s simple: just ask me what you didn’t understand and I’ll do my best to clarify you.

@ writerx; “You missunterstood me!!! Not YOUR english is not good enough, but MY english!!!”

Now, how the heck should I understand that, when you say: ““unfortunately I don't understand everything you wrote…” you’re referring to YOUR English.

    @ writerx; “sry again...”

No problem; happy we fixed the misunderstanding.

Last night I've been at Piano (NYC) where DJ was Steve T – another NY DJ that uses Traktor.

For more about what I learned from him, please see here

if they see you in the booth with a laptop, they will know what you use - otherwise what are you besides a dj when you're in a dj booth pumping out tracks...

like a few others in this thread feel, i think a dj is a dj no matter what he uses - though the term is antiquated now, it still means a professional who plays music to crowds of people in a venue.

nothing changes - good music, tight and creative mixing technique, intuitive crowd reading, and putting out a charged and constant vibe or energy output - are the characteristics of a good dj in my opinion - and no matter what they use, if the end result is a packed floor jammed with sweaty bodies moving in sync with the music and loving it then you've done your job proper and no one will nitpick on whether you use vinyl, cd, mp3, or your dad's old 8-track deck ;]

I call myself a DJ no matter what I use.. b/c it all stems from the same thing. The music comes from the same place.. Your just using a diff disc to do it with.... it being a 12incher, a CD or a hard disk... he musoc came from the same place. Its how you use it that realy matters. If you are one of those dj's that segues from song to song without any beat matching or scratching or anthing to make the songs blend.. you wont getvery far (I also refer to those as a radio type of DJ) if you use what media that you like best and can do these things.. then you can call yourself a dj... if you are a remix artist or a turntableiest (even if you use FS and a PC to supply your music.. but use turn tables to break it down on) thenb you are a turntablest and are still a DJ.. but you take it to the extream..

I have seen DJ that used traktor (infact the DJ I replaced at the dance club i worked at) tht call them selves DJ.. that used traktor.. but was more radio like (meaning didnt even beat match the segues between songs) and drive the crowd away.. then i came in
(using CD's at first..) and show them that youi can Club DJ from a computer and make it sound like turntables.. and they refer to me as one of the best DJ's in the area (the peeps dont know what you realy use.. all they know is that you can tear a set up and keep them dancing till they drop... and that without even using FS.. sence I have not invested in the system yet... still waiting for all the bugs to be worked out. Its all in how you pesent yourself.. My fav quote is.....
Thats all I have to say about that..... Ty DJ Disturbed
