Should I save the instruments (nki files) I have downloaded into the appropriate directory by Kontakt category (eg. synth, piano, drums etc.) or should I create a new "User-created" directory for all patches I create or download? Does it matter or not which way I go?

From my point of view whether a NKI instrument is user-created on NI-created doe not matter--its sonic quality is what counts. But perhaps it would be good to keep separate non-NI-generated instruments(NKis).

I would appreciate some guidelines or principles about this.

There is no difference really where you save them. I always create new folders outside the Kontakt lib.

Easier to back up , locate.. etc.. But, it's up to you and what is best for your work flow.

On a Mac I would advise keeping them in:
user-documents-native-instruments-Kontakt3. This folder is already created for user instruments.
    Can't help on a PC.
