Yeah I figured it would happen at the same time :/ Guess they want us to buy other peoples STEMS but to me the best part of this feature is being able to create my own STEMS from my own tracks.... Gotta take care of the "important" people first I guess....

looks like we're not important enough... and yes, the best part of stems would be the creation of such pleasant "container".
Since NI won't integrate Maschine into Traktor, or vice versa, and the only way to sync Maschine with Traktor is this messy MIDI-Stuff (which isn't working as I prefer) I HAVE to use stems.

And they're not releasing the required tool....

This might help you, it is and easy way to sync Maschine and Traktor without MIDI cables or rocket science configuration.

    Hope this helps

    old post:

If anyone got some stem files already and can tell (not send cuz that'd be illegal lol) me what's in there I will probably be able to make some magic and share it with you guys. I SUPPOSE if you change their file extension to .zip you could unzip all the files but let's see

UPDATE: I found a free one on http://www.native-instruments.com/de/specials/stems/ and unfortunately it isn't as easy as I hoped. The file itself is a "real" mp4 file already, but ofc a bit different.

The first line already contains "isom" which implies a very basic mp4 implementation without any further known "extras" making it a bit harder to get where this thing is going. Can anyone tell me how many channels this stem has (I don't own any stem-ready gear)? There is a line containing "Zmp4a" which appears 5 times in this file, followed by a block of information.

In line 392 the information for the artwork starts. Interesting here is that the file appears to be created with GIMP whereas most of us would've expected Photoshop (I guess)

Line 2170 ends with meta tag information (www.throughmyspeakers.bandcamp.com)

At line 2250 it gets interesting: here I suppose the stem file actually starts. We got this line:

    stem{"mastering_dsp": {"compressor": {"ratio": 3, "output_gain": 0, "enabled": false, "threshold": 0, "attack": 0.003000000026077032, "input_gain": 0, "release": 0.300000011920929, "hp_cutoff": 300, "dry_wet": 50}, "limiter": {"release": 0.001000000047497451, "threshold": -0.2000000029802322, "ceiling": 0, "enabled": true}}, "version": 1, "stems": [{"color": "#fa8d29", "name": "Drums"}, {"color": "#3f8bfe", "name": "808 Sub"}, {"color": "#40ff40", "name": "Chords"}, {"color": "#ff40eb", "name": "Vox FX"}]}

Which looks like the effect parameter settings for the track + its name + appearance in stems. My guess with 5 tracks was wrong apparently. After that something appears that looks like the actual tracks in there. I would now have to look for strings that separate the track information but I can't be bothered to focus on that now. If anyone wants to continue from here am glad if I gave them a head start, basically the only thing to care about now is where the tracks start/end so one could replace that information on one of the four tracks and then hear his own vibes in a STEM file  . If someone actually finds some time to investigate this and can supply information, I'd be more than happy to provide some little tool for that, let's see if someone's interested. Honestly I don't see too much of a problem here anymore as we now even know where the mastering section is at. I am sure NI didn't encrypt anything because then the file wouldn't be playable in iTunes - wait a second, that might be the thing that I thought of being the fifth track! So we'd have tracks 1-4 for stem and before that track 0 for every other tool/track deck.

The last line of the file is
JfreeIsoMedia File Produced with GPAC 0.5.2-DEV-rev333-gddb5c55-master which is, again, related to mp4 encoding.

    Have fun!

you don't need a reverse tool, open the stems file in adobe premiere, viola! 5 x stereo channels, this is not a magic format, this is just a multichannel, mp4

Why spent big Money on DAW's now? It really is a simple Format and will be supported by more free Tools soon I hope.

Just open the mp4 in Audacity and you will have the 5 tracks like any multichannel file to do with it what you want.

I even managed to make a stem.mp4 myself with ffmpeg, though it was difficult. I want them in lossless ALAC if possible but I only could use AAC for now. Audacity has a plugin for exporting with ffmpeg too, but here's no luck for me to Export the multichannel.

Not realy, Ive been using this solution quite a while, and it is the only acceptable way to sync those two applications. But if you watched carefully, you might recognized that even Ean has to fiddle with the MidiOffset. Really? what is this? What year is this?
Thanks anyway, I like your intention :D

Anyway, I was hyped for Stems, but the tools we would need didn't got suplied...
    I AM a bit upset.

    Thanks NI.

I'm sorry- I hadn't been following the Stems developments very closely- but am I understanding this correctly? That after all the months of coverage of the Stems format and its official introduction there is still no SDK or tool available publicly that music producers can use to create Stem files?

And THATS the reason why I am upset. How can this project get spread worldwide, if you don't hand out the needed tools? How could this be OpenSource? Yes, I totally understand that Joe Avarage should play with this toy, but we're not Joe, or Jane.

Sure, people who CAN actually code such SDKs laugh about our lack of coding willpower /hehe, but we're musicians, we have our own "culture" and skills... And why should I have to create my own environment if there is already one, but held back for political reasons?

My hype for stems has been "worn out" and as long there are not a dozen stems included in a update, and the needed tools are not available, I AM doing it my way and get more angry how bad everything went.

Nah, not really, I'm just a little bit upset. That seems to be an German virtue...

Yeah the still missing creator tool is the biggest joke ruining this otherwise great idea. It should have been ready right at the announcement date half a year back, so that there would be a big pool of files for everyone and kickstart this whole thing.

Maybe they are proud of themselves for this marketing trick. Ripping people off with the handful overpriced stems the sites are selling now, but I am not buying. This could also fire backwards and in a year or so it will be another minimal niche like the remix decks before.

Some people must already have this or at least a familiar tool else there could not be any *.stem.mp4 file available at all. So coding may not be the main issue. But: I guess not everybody in the music business likes the idea of anyone being able to create his own stem - especially when it comes to the projected major interest and demand in the scene.
From the beginning I doubted (and still do) that the legal aspects have deeply been regarded from all points of view. So I assume there are some "internal" disputes about publishing the tool related to obstacles we may not recognize at the moment.

As an example: Every customer will appreciate cheap and qualified spare parts by third party manufacturer for this gives a great benefit and margin to everybody - but not the originator.....

Yes: NI seems to have a lot of (more or less important) labels joining this project - how about the rest? All "big players" are missing, why?

have none of you considered there have been a few labels asked to join the beta program, to ensure creation goes well, i'm sure the tool will be out soon and the rest of us can catchup releasing our tracks in this format, why not just spend this time creating the 5x wavs required rather than bitching like schoolgirls....

there are other apps you can use to create these stems files, i've proved this with premiere, there's tutorials online showing how to do it with ffmpeg....

and as for overpriced stems, you really consider £3 too much for a track broken down into parts?

I would think most DJ's are not Computer geeks who are working with command line Software like ffmpeg every day. And even if, creating a stem with tags, the right compression and everything else needs a big chunk of knowledge. They want the files ready or at least make them with a few clicks in a gui.

And yes, I find all digital Music too expensive. Do you buy a cd Album with 10 or more tracks for 30 € (or Pounds)? Here in Germany a physical cd costs about 12 - 15 €. Digital Distribution should lower the Price even for lossless files. Nobody complains about iTunes or the Music companies in general ripping People off. For me a lossless file should cost about 50 - 70 Cent and a stem double as highest.

I used to buy records that had one good track and were £8 a throw so for the same track at £1 to £2 I'm very happy to pay. Where are you getting music that's £3 a track?

50 to 70 cents? By the time the distributor and label takes their cut what's left for the artist? Why bother making and releasing music if that's all it's worth?

Hey bro can you tell us what you did exactly? I got no fast internet over here but if you give me a list of commands I can make a simple Java app for this so people can create their own stuff.
